Using Aircard

I am trying to use a Sprint Aircard on my Inspiron 640m (Vista). I install the software, but when I put the card in the wireless slot, it is not detected. I also tried putting a regular wireless card (Linksys) in the slot and it did not detect that either. Is there something that needs to be turned on in order to activate this slot?
