Video Fan error code 3700:011B on my e1705

I have an Inspiron e1705 with XP pro and the nVidia Go 7800 with Dell's drivers.  It's 2 years old and out of warranty and has been rock solid until last night.  I started getting artifacts on the screen, really bad, the entire screen was covered and the display would flicker off and on.  Then I got a blue screen saying that a hardware malfunction was detected.  I rebooted the system, and the POST screen was completely messed up, it has red and yellow symbols and articats all over the Dell logo as is was preparing to boot into Windows.  This time the artifacts were even worse and I got another blue screen about the video drivers.

I ran the dell diagnostic tests and only get 1 error.  The Video Fan test reports the error code: 3700:011B then it says it expected to see the fan running at 2500 RPM but it detected 3538 RPM.  I ran the test multiple times to make sure and it always came back with the error.

So obviously I am having issues with the GPU.  I let the system cool down for an hour and then booted into safe mode and used driver sweeper to completely remove the old drivers and I reinstalled them.  I still have the same issues.  Is my video card hosed?  I am pretty sure that the go 7800 is a built in card, is this correct?  Can I replace it?  I am worried that the video card is just dieing but I really can't afford a new laptop right now, is there anything I can do?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi
Did you check to see if the fan is plug up with dusty or fuzzies you can use caned air to clean it
if the does not work.
The fan may have gone bad but it might be replaced you can read the manual to see if it can .
Manual is here
I would try cleaning everything first!
Good Luck

Hey, thanks for the advice. I cleaned out the fans to the best of my ability without taking the entire laptop apart. Now all the fan tests pass. I thought all my problems were gone, but now whenever I open a 3d intensive application (game, video, etc...) my system immediately gets artifacts all over the screen and flickers and completely locks up. I am going to try to clean the fans again when I have time today but I am afraid my video card may have been perminantly damaged while the fans were clogged up. Luckily I found out that e1705 video cards can be replaced. If it comes to this, does anyone know which Go cards can fit in the e1705? Can it handle any of the 8 series cards? I know the Go 7950 GTX is too big for the e1705's that came with Go 7800's.

Is it possible to just bypass the addin video and use the integrated video? I tried buying a new card but I don't want to spend more than $150 to fix the 2 year old laptop when I can get a new one for $600. It would be cool if I could just use the onboard video for now...can I remove the card or do I need to put a jumper in there to tell it to use onboard...or is it just not an option?

Hi
I do not think there is a onboard video controller
that is why it has the replaceable video card no laptops come
with a onboard and a replaceable card that i know of !!
So you need to replace it or buy a new computer !
Good Luck
