Hi,

I have exactly the same problem, it happened after I installed XP. (Using an Inspiron 5000)

Try installing the Motherboard Chipset drivers from Dell Support.  After my last reformat, I recall the buttons not working until one of the drivers was installed.  I believe it was the intel chipset driver.  You should be able to click on the downloads tab at the top of ths page and it will take you to downloads for your system.

I just reloaded my XP (actually upgraded to Pro) and my volume buttons do not work either.  I tried to run the dell-utilites setup but it said "cannot run on this system".  No sure what to do next.  I even tried downloading a copy off dell's website, but same result.  Any help?

I finally figured it out.  To get the function of the volume button back just install the QuickSet software that is included with the application/driver CD.  The QuickSet software includes the volume, screen brightness, and more settings.

Hope that helps some of you out.

Ok, here's the steps.

  1. Insert the Blue CD that says "Drivers, Utilities, and Applications" in your CDROM.
  2. A Dell Welcome screen will pop up and give you information.
  3. Click on 'Next'
  4. Your sytem hardware will then be loaded in the program and appicable drivers/utilites will be shown.
  5. Scroll down to 'Application' and Click on 'Dell QuickSet'
  6. You will then be taken to a screen where you can install the QuickSet utility.
    1. Scroll down to the bottom of the page
    2. Click 'Install' or 'Extract'
  7. It will ask you where to extract the files, just use default.  Click OK.
  8. After extracting all the files.  It will show you that the extraction was complete.  Click OK.
  9. The QuickSet installation will begin automatically.

Hope that helps.

I've had a non functioning volume control on my 8600 as well.  Reinstalled everything on the resource cd, volume control worked again for 1 day.  Has once again ceased to work...   Dell tech support was useless, made me want to throw my laptop into the wall.  I think I'll just return it instead.

Hi!

I had already tried to reinstall the quickset utilities but the button nerver started working again.

Recently, i have bought an external usb, wireless keyboard/mouse from logitech. This keyboard comes with software and volume control button. Guess what, even the volume control button on the laptop is working when the external keyboard is plugged into the laptop. So i guess that logitech knows how to write good drivers way better than DELL....

Buttons still dont work for me.

Sometimes its ok but most of time its buggy (only one button works).

This is the third driver problem i experience with my i8500 and i think dell support is really unefficient as they never were able to help me.

Quickset has nothing to do with control buttons fuctionality. Somebody mentioned once that their support is incorporated in sound card driver. I reinstalled my XP Pro recently and don't have any problem with their fuctionality. I don't use quickset but I did install the latest sound card driver from Dell download section.
