Vostro 1700 audio problems, need help

ok. i am 15, i can usually solve my tech issues but i have tried dl'ing a different driver, and updating, and it does not work at all. my new vostro is great, everything is tip top except sound. sound through my laptop, wheather it be speakers, headphones or even laptop speakers the sound "scratches". this "scratchy" sound is like... the kinda sound from a lp kinda sound sorta, its just a staticy scratchy sound, it happens any where in any song, itunes OR windows media player.

my sound is sigmatel high definition audio codec. ive browsed other forums getting responses such as its vista, return to dell, or get it checked. i put in a cd, and played the cd, its not itunes or my music i transfered. when i watch south park on allsp.com it scratches too, but not as frequently but enough to irritate me.

when i run world of warcraft, video is fine, the audio on that is good, slightly better than that of allsp.com. i know these problems arent because of the site, or WoW its something inside mylaptop but i cannot figure it out. this problem is so discouraging, i only use mylaptop now for school i barely take it out, please... someone help me.

edit: i have read one of the stickies pertaining similarily to my problem. my music is not ripped at all. all 1800 of my songs are bought off itunes or are on cd. i will read that article soon and get back here.

I suggest you run the audio test in Dell Diagnostics just to rule out any hardware problems.

To run Diagnostics restart the computer and as soon as it starts to boot up hold down f12. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot assessment tests for 3 or 4 minutes before the Dell Diagnostic starts. These pre-boot tests play some beeps and tones through the system speaker but this doesn't test the rest of the audio hardware, so you still need to let Dell Diagnostics run after the pre-boot tests finish.

When Dell Diagnostics opens, select 'custom', then the audio test. This will test your audio system independently of Windows and drivers, meaning it doesn't matter if they are working correctly or not. Alternate between using headphones and listening to speakers in case only one is working correctly.

Dell Diagnostics will play some audio and ask you whether you heard it. If you do hear the audio clearly without the noise that means the hardware is okay but there is a problem with the software or configuration. I'd try the tips in our stickie.

If you still hear the noise during the test then the hardware is at fault. In that case contact Dell.

I just read the Dell article on "Choppy/Skipping Audio under Windows Vista Workarounds".

I disabled the 802.11a band on the wireless card and now the audio is much better.  It cleared up about 90% of the popping/scratch noise.

I also just purchased a new Vostro 1700 (11/15/2007) and I am having the same issues with the audio playback through the laptop speakers.  The playback is reminiscent of listening to old LPs with scratches.

I did run the diagnostic as you suggested and the hardware checks out fine.  Could it be a Vista/driver issue?
