Vostro 1720 Memory
Something very odd about memory and this laptop. It is almost as if there is 1GB on-board over and above the two DIMM slots because when I put a single 2GB DIMM in it says there are 3GB or memory installed.
Anyway... what I was trying to do was upgrade the memory. It says 8GB max but I can't figure it out. It came with 1 - 1GB SO-DIMM and 1 - 2GB SO-DIMM and the BOIOS Says roughly 3.5GB but when I put 2 - 2GB SO-DIMMS in the amount of memory the BIOS reflects does change. It is like the max configuration is 1 - 1GB SODIMM and 1 - 2GB SODIMM. Has anyone been able to take it beyond that?
These things aren't really old enough to have a 3GB max. What's the story?

Is the operating system 32- or 64-bit?

I am not in the OS yet. I am looking in the BIOS. That is what the BIOS reports.

Hi,
Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum.
Vostro 1720 supports a minimum of 1GB and max memory of 8GB (2x4GB). This system does have Flash Cache Module of 1GB. So ideally, two 4GB modules should work fine on the computer without any issues. Please try one 4GB memory module in each memory slot and check if it reflects fine in the BIOS. If they work fine, try both modules.

Try each module one at a time in each socket -- either one of the modules is bad, or one of the sockets is bad. Systematic trial will tell you which is the case.
