Webcam Unrecognizable
Hi All,
Thanks so much for reading this! The video component of my webcam hasn't been working.
My laptop:
- Studio XPS 1340 (~4 years old)
- Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit
- Service Tag:
- Video Card: nVidia GeForce 9500M
Problems/Symptoms:
- Device Manager screenshot
- Devices and Printers screenshot
- It works 1% of the time. I've had a few instances where the webcam suddenly works without me having done anything (confirmed by a very enthusiastic video chat), but the next day it stops working.
- I get the "USB device not recognized" error about every time I use my laptop.
- The microphone works no problem.
What I've tried:
- Re-installing the OS from scratch 4 times. I've tried both Professional and Ultimate versions.
- Installing drivers in the correct order as mentioned in these forums
- Installing the webcam driver for Windows Vista/XP
- The Webcam Diagnostics. The "Problems with USB Device" category passes the tests, but doesn't list the webcam.
What I haven't tried:
- Opening the laptop and messing with the hardware inside (I tried opening it to see if something was just loose but I couldn't figure out where to look).
Thanks so much!
Mark

Mark,
The webcam not showing in the symptom tree, means that the computer is not seeing the webcam as being attached.

Thanks, Rick! Does that mean that it is definitely a hardware issue? If so, do you know how I can check to see if a cable is loose? I wasn't able to find any online guides on the internal layout of the Studio XPS 1340.

Mark,
Not showing in the symptom tree, means most likely it came loose. Most have found it loose at the top, near the webcam.
A video I found and pictures from other members may help. They can be found HERE.

Ah thank you. I wasn't able to find a video for the Studio XPS 1340... do you have suggestions for where I can get instructions for the 1340? Thanks again!
