In my opinion, if you are using the wireless network to just access the internet, then there is no need to get the SpeedBooster system. It will be a waste of money.
If you get a "802.11B/G Wireless Lan" in your computer, then you will need a router. You will hook up the cable connection into the router. Then the wireless computer can talk to the router and "route" the connection to the internet.
You will need to get a router that has some ethernet ports on the back so that you can hard wire you desktop to it. I am assuming that your desktop has an ethernet connection.
I really don't know what an ethernet connection is. I have a dimension 3000 desktop bought June 2005. My cable now comes to a box rented from the cable co. There is then a cable going to the computer. Almost looks like a larger telephone type connection. Without pulling the thing out- I can't remember if that goes to the "network connector" or the "modem connector" as they are named on my setup sheet.
I took a quick look at the two links above and think they will be of great help. Have to get to work now.
The Ethernet connection is the cable that is currently connecting your computer to the modem. You said it looks like a phone line, which it does, but if you examine it closely you'll see that the plugs are a bit larger.
