what is this chime?

My laptop has a chime that goes off randomly about every 30 seconds to 1 minute.  Even when there are no other programs running.  It is very annoying and I can't figure out 'where' it is coming from!  Any suggestions???

Go to the 'Sounds and Audio Devices Properties' control. You can find this in the Start/Control Panel or by right clicking the speaker-shaped icon on the taskbar and clicking 'adjust audio properties'.

Click the 'Sounds' tab. There will be a list of the sounds the system uses and a label of the system events they are associated with. Play each sound by selecting it and clicking the arrow. Try to find your noise (note that the same sound can be used multiple times so try them all). If you find it then you will know what event causes it.

In the dropdown box at the bottom you can change the sound for an event to 'none'.
