Why does my computer hate me?

I've spent so much time on the phone to India since purchasing my Inspiron 5100 that I should be fluent in Hindi by now. Sheesh.

I'm on my 4th hard drive (a refurb I might add, cause I didn't report the problem the first time until 2 weeks later, which was a week before my 3 month warranty ran out.  They've replaced *everything* due to suspected  heat damage in August of 2004, even though I never got a heat message.  And now, the thing is turning itself off and when i start it back up, it tells me it's over heating.  Why would anyone sell a computer like this to anyone?  It's been nothing but problems.  And they refuse to replace the system "for that reason sir".  I get the same answer when I ask 'How about that reason 4 times now?"

What should i do?  What can i do?  I don't want to talk to the phillipines anymore!

Hi Seamus, trust me I should know Hindi by now too.  Check out my thread, "Inspiron 5150 (which was a mistake it's a 5100) died."

I've had two computers die from hard drive failure within the last year.  One we've already gotten rid of and the other happened just a few days ago.

Four times?  You've had FOUR hard drives fail?  Lemon law, my friend.  Check it out.

Much of the heat problems coming from the 5100 systems are dust related.  It has been reported on this forum for a long time now. Those system attract dust real fast, and everyone should use a can of compressed air at least once per week on the vents, to get the dust out.  Once the dust builds up inside, the only thing you can do is open it up and clean it by hand, not for everyone....Sorry for your troubles, but find someone to clean the system if you cannot do it yourself.  Hope this will solve some of the problems....If it is something else, sorry, I can not assist.  The next time you purchase a notebook computer, use it as much as possible during the 21 day return policy period and if you find something odd or wrong with it, call tech support fast or return it during this period.  Never hesitate for one moment, send it back during that 21 day return period.  Also, get a longer warranty for notebook computers, for peace of mind.

If it does anything else contact Dell and let them know that it keeps throwing up a overheating issue and you are fearing for your saftey. They will pull it back to engineering and send ou out a new unit.
