Wierd display problem with CPX......

Hi all,
I have a Dell CPX PIII. Suddenly it developed a strobe-like flickering of the screen. It's not there when you first turn the machine on but begins a few minutes later. Also, if you keep using it, it will develop a black area in the upper right corner of the screen. The blackness creeps down and across at an angle but never gets more than 1/4" by 3/8". Just enough to partially obscure the red "X" to close the internet explorer(hope that makes sense). I have used the computer with a CRT monitor and it has absolutely no problems driving the CRT without defect. The computer runs fine otherwise, has never smelled hot or burnt and the screen will be fine again if you turn the machine off and on but the symptoms appear again a almost immediately after boot-up(almost like heat builds to a certain point and triggers it). I have talked a to a few people and got no answers that were more than guesses. Since guessing will cost me a lot of money in parts I'm hoping someone here can help me.
Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum,

Link here to FanGUI, this free software is a small utility that you can install to keep track of temperatures and fan control in your system.

You can also run the Dell Diagnostics to check the hardware operation of your fans.

Probably the most important thing to be done to prevent cooling problems and heat damage to your system would be a regular cleaning schedule to remove lint and dust that
builds up in and around vents, fans and cooling fins in your cooling system.

The exact method will vary with different models but, look under the "Product Support" in the upper right of this page and open 'User Guides'. Look there for
your Service Manual which will aid in any disassembly involved.

The best tools for this operation are a household vacuum cleaner and clean, dry compressed air, the "Canned Air" sold in many stores will work for this (don't inhale that "air").

Use care in any disassambly not to bend or move any heat sinks, the oil on your fingers is enough to damage those parts, but removal of the lint and dust will allow the
fans to do the job of drawing cooling air through your system.

Hi,

It sounds to me like your backlight is failing. The flickering is the invertor going flat out and not able to keep the voltage up. You can replace the LCD, or get the backlight replaced. http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=962&prevaction=category&previd=21&prevstart=0 This link is for an LCD.
