Dell has not verified Windows 8 to function with the M4500 system unfortunately and so no drivers were developed for the system to function with Windows 8 installed, it’s recommended for the best performance the operating system that shipped with the system originally remains installed.
You could test the drivers developed for Windows 7 - Broadcom USH drivers for this system line are usually Security device drivers and installed through either the Control Vault or DDP Driver packs.
jkcons - the Broadcom USH driver believe it or not is the Dell ControlVault driver which also is for the fingerprint reader listed under Security.
I've just successfully installed 8.1 on my newly acquired M4500. Ensure you have the BIOS at the most current level and then the installation (fresh) only took about 30 minutes. There were only 2 drivers required per Device Manager to complete the installation. The Broadcom USH and an "unknown device". The Broadcom as I've explained above and the "unknown device" is the ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver under "Application". The last driver that I would suggest updating (at least) is the touchpoint (Alps) driver which is under Mouse, Keyboard and Input with the "Dell Multi-Touch Touchpad Driver"
Stating that you cannot successfully upgrade these system's OSes to 8.1 is a copout. Currently I have these systems successfully running under 8.1 without any issues: D410 D810 D820 M4300 M4500 And I have had my D430 running with W10 for the past 6 months.
