Windows XP Hibernation Problem

Hello all,
I have an Inspiron 8100 that doesn't like to hibernate. This problem started with no warning last spring, without my installing anything knowingly. When I tell the computer to hibernate (doesn't matter which method), it gives me the XP splah screen, then my screen goes blank. The power light is on, the HD light isn't. It will stay in this state indefinitely (I waited for 5+ hours once to see what it would do), without further action.

Once in a blue moon, it will actually get to the "hibernate" stage, when the progress bar screen comes up; on these occasions, it hibernates fine, and wakes up fine. 95% of the time, however, it just gives me the blank screen.

It has newest of all drivers & BIOS. I've tried deleting the hibernate file, restarting and re-enabling it... no luck. I've also tried a repair install of Windows XP. The next 2 times I tried hibernating after this install, it worked, since then it hasn't.

Any ideas?

does standby works???

my 5150 has the same problem.
Dell seams to have a big issue with standby, shutdown and hibernate, but does not care.

Alex- Standby works *most* of the time... not always :(

So am I looking a hardware or software issue here, in your opinion?

I had a similar problem, but I have an I8200 with a Quadro 4 700 Go GL.  I recently upgraded my NVidia drivers ( www.laptopvideo2go.com) to (61.80) and Hibernate and Standby now work great!  I would guess it is a driver issue...

I just updated my driver.... did three full hibernate cycles w/o a single problem... it seems like it might be fixed!!!! Thanks!
