Any information on the hard drive will not be deleted at the Dell factory when repairing the laptop unless if the problem itself is with the hard drive. Dell factory will only reimage the hard drive if there are any bad sectors on the hard drive. As all hardware components are checked at the factory to make the computer working and if the issue is with the hard drive then Dell factory technician might reimage or change the hard drive.
If you have any important data and do not want the hard drive to be changed or reimaged, you need to inform the technical support representative or the Dell dispatcher not to reimage the hard drive before the dispatch is created.
But make sure you are backing up all the data from the hard drive before you send the laptop to Dell depot for any repair.
As the issue is not related to the hard drive, ideally it will not be formatted. However, please provide me the Service Tag of the system. I will try to contact the respective team to update them regarding this so that the hard drive is not formatted.
Or for faster response please contact Dell technical support at you region and update them about the same.
Please private message the system service tag, contact number and registered owner’s name. To private message, accept my friend request; click on my user name and click start conversation.
Hello again Nikhil, unfortunately the Laptop has been with Dell for a few days now. I'm assuming if they were going to formatte the drive it would have been done by now.
As for the service tag, i haven't got that, the shop i purchsed the laptop from is dealing with it all.
I'm just preparing myself for a day of reloading / downloading programmes that i use.
I can understand the importance of the data in the laptop, like we discussed earlier the laptop has a problem with the AC adapter and motherboard the factory technician would work on those.
Before coming to a conclusion let us wait until you receive the laptop.

It depends on what the problem is - yes, they could well reimage the drive if it's determined Windows is at fault.

Hi Nikhil,
My laptop is already with Dell. The problem is "AC Adapter cannot be determined/ Charging problem".
They are running tests on it, so the shop i bought it from inform me.
I'm assuming, if they do wipe it, they will reinstall windows 7, as the laptop came preloaded.
Trevor.
