XPS 17 boot problems

I have a Dell XPS 17 with a boot problem.

If I press the power button it flashes on and then off.  The machine does not even begin to power up - no fans, nothing on the screen, etc.  This occurs on both battery and charger.  This problem originally started out as happening once in a while, and has progressed to the point where the machine will not boot at all.

However, with the machine connected to the charger, if I press and hold the D key on the keyboard and then press the power button the machine always powers on, runs the LCD diagnostics, and then drops into the normal boot menu.  Running the hardware diagnostics from the bios shows no errors.

Any ideas as to what the is causing the failure and why the LCD diagnostics appear to always get the machine to work?

Hi timl6574,

After the system boots normally please update the bios and chipset using the link below.

http://dell.to/13EVLww

In this link punch in the system service tag or express service code, select the appropriate operating system under the BIOS category select the latest BIOS and install it. Under the chipset category select the Intel HM67 chipset driver and install it.

Connect the Ac Adapter before updating the BIOS and do not use the system until it restarts after the update.

Let me know about the progress.

The bios was already up to date and your utility confirmed this.  I loaded the HM67 chipset driver and ran the complete diagnostics.  It reported no problems.

The original boot problem is still there.

Hi timl6574,

I am sorry for the delayed response; please load BIOS defaults and check if the issue persists, follow the steps below.

Shutdown the computer tap F2 during the startup to access the BIOS page, in BIOS page press the F9 key on the keyboard which will load BIOS defaults and press F10 to save and exit.

Hello,

I performed the procedure you recommended - boot to bios page, F9 , load default configuration, F10, save and exit .  There is no difference - the problem is still the same.
