XPS M1210 BIOS Update Error

I am having trouble trying to update to the new BIOS version release.

"MXC062 BIOS Flash A07

An unexpected error occured while running the Flash application. Please reboot and try again.

If the error continues, please contact technical help.

Application Error Return: 0x00000610
Windows Error Return: 0x00000002"

My current BIOS version is A05. I'm running on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit. I've tried rebooting, no luck. I run it as administrator, it still doesn't work. Technical support? Forget that I'd rather post on the forums. I would like to stay away from the DOS method because I don't any DOS bootable CDs to use. Please help!

I get the EXACT same problem (right down to the error numbers) for the XPS M1710 BIOS AO6 update...

Since this is a brand new update, I think you should contact Dell or wait a couple of days for a possible download correction from Dell. Sometimes there is an error in the download file itself. Bios updates are not to be taken lightly. You could make your computer unusable. Make sure you actually have the Intel 945GM motherboard this bios is for. Bios updates should not be applied unless absolutely necessary.

Its something to do with the way the file downloads.  I originally got the same errors and it didnt matter whether I tried to just install or downlad, save and install.

After about 5 tries it worked...I dont know why.

so i solved this stupidity without any help from dell tech support....i am really upset....i will never get a dell again...imagine they told me to clean install back to xp and then reinstall vista
since the upgrade has certain defect specially for those who upgraded to vista
and this exact erroe appeared when update a02 was available to xp version...and users that time wrote that you have to make a boot cd (I used nero) then copy the file update to the cd and reboot from cd
run the file in c:
and voila update is ran!!!!!!!!!!!!
dell tech support..is crampy
everytime a call they say that since i upgraded to vista (which dell paid me for) they put the fault into vista!!!
To all do not buy dell trust me..needed media direct 3.0 got it without dell....needed creative audigy for vista got it....dell doesn't deserve a cent from my money!!!!!
thanks

thanks i have done it my system is running brilliantly...
i have bought my system last october
was eligible for vista upgrade...but there was something wrong in my case so dell gave me some credit to buy the retail upgrade after 2months of strugling in the phone for hours..........
then had to get media direct 3.0 to make my system run as factory spent one more month in the phone to order media direct 3.0 to no avail then thank you god for a miracle and i got the cd from another source in the internet and install it....trust me i got this system bec i thought first dell has an excellent service and warranty.....i am a physician and my hospital has a deal with dell but now after they heard about my experience and i have all the chatting logs and emails to prove it.....I solved all the problems by myself some research in the internet and since i am an IT as a hobby to solve it.....delltech support 90% of the time is wrong that is a fact tell me they are great or not in my case that's true!!!
thanks

You do have a bootable CD-Its the Drivers and Utilities CD which came with your system. There is an option to quit when you run it-this gives you a dos prompt. If you burn a copy of the bios onto another CD, you can swap the disks when you have the dos prompt and run the Bios update from there. Unfortunately, when I do this I have another error(MEC boot block is too old) and I can't update mine at all. Some people have been able to update with this method, but not me. Good luck!

I had the same problem however found a way out

Copy the bios update exe file to a USB Key ( now a days every one has one)
Insert Dell Inspiron Resource CD ( it is also Dell System software Cd look on the cd cover)
Restart the system
At Dell Logo Screen , press F12 Key ( Function row F12 )
Select boot from CD/DVD Rom from Boot Menu
The system would prompt for pressing any key ...
Press  Q to exit to DOS
Select the drive letter for USB key ( now it needs a bit to hit and trial for my system the usb key took the letter C)
so type C:
check whether the file is there or not by typing dir and hit enter
once found at the prompt type the file name of the bios update and the bios would get flashed

Regards
XPS Dell

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. I still get the same error message I got before- the MEC boot block is too old. I have tried everything I can think of-I even have a bootable USB drive. If I can't find out how to update the MEC boot block I won't be able to update the Bios. I don't even know what an MEC boot block is!!

Similar to other XPS M1210 owners I have a 1 month old XPS M1210 with an A06 version System BIOS.

I have tried all suggested techniques to update to the A07 version System BIOS.

In windows I get the message:

"  An unexpected error occured while running the Flash application. Please reboot and try again.

If the error continues, please contact technical help.

   Application Error Return: 0x00000610
   Windows Error Return: 0x00000002"

When booting from disk I also get the message:

"  MEC boot block is too old"

I await an answer from DELL, as clearly there is an issue preventing installation on a significant number of machines - if this update is really urgent, surely they must give us a way to install it.

I recently encountered the same errors

BIOS upgrade from Windows:

Application Error Return:   0x00000610
Windows Error Return:     0x00000002

BIOS upgrade from DOS:

The MEC boot block on your system is too old to be used with this BIOS.
You must update the MEC boot block to a revision no older than 2316.

and got the following advice from Dell Support:

Run regedit

The Registry Editor window appears.

Double-click the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to expand its contents.
Double-click the folder SYSTEM to expand its contents.
Double-click the folder ControlSet001 to expand its contents.
Double-click the folder Services to expand its contents.
Right-click the DELLBIOS folder and select Delete.
Close all windows and restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Then I reran the BIOS upgrade from Windows and it completed successfully

Machine Inspiron 640m
OS Vista Home Premium pre-installed
BIOS upgrade from A09 to A10
