XPS M1330 problems

Hey all,

I bought my XPS M1330 last December and everything was fine until about 2 months ago. I experienced the vertical lines on the screen problem, and just found out that it was a common problem amongst XPS M1330. I called the technical support and they sent me a technician to replace the motherboard and it was good.

But last night I had left my laptop on to run the disk defragmenter overnight. When I woke up in the morning, the screen showed a blank screen and there was a BIG arrow cursor. So I turned off my system and turn it back on and Windows would not run, it would just show a blank screen.

I called technical support, and at first they thought that the disk defragmenter have corrupted some of my files and thats why Windows won´t run. So we tried to reinstall Windows, we got through the "Windows is loading files" screen, but after it loads it would show a blank screen again. Then we ran through the hardware tests, and I got an error code which is supposedly related with the hardrive. So now they have to send a technician to change my hardrive.

Has anyone faced this problems before? And what was the solution?

Also, the technician on the phone said that in the future I should not run disk defragmenter on my M1330 anymore. Is it true that it is bad for the system?

Running disk fragmentor is not bad for the system, however there is little need to run it on the NTFS file system.  Furthermore, I have heard that Vista does have the disk fragmentor run in times where the system is awake powered on, but not in use, I would have to research to confirm this.

If you got a fail code fromthe hard drive (they run 2000-141 to 2000-148) It would have to be replaced.  Furthermore, the XPS M1330 Nvidia di problem is something that was/is resolved with a bios change of the cooling fans, unless the problem was already existant than the motherboard has to be replaced.

the short answer is if you were having problems and tried to reinstall windows unsuccessfully.  You more than likely have a hardware problem.  A bad hard drive could easily cause the problems you are speaking about.
