XPS M1530 - Loose Power Cable / Adapter Problem, Wrong type...

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else had experienced this issue. I recently purchased my XPS 1530 and have loved the laptop itself but it has one irritating problem. The Ac adaptor doesn't seem to fit correctly into the laptop itself....

The adaptor powers the machine OK, no issues there, but it does not fit flush into the side of the laptop, it wobbles quite a bit and is very easy to fall out if i move the laptop when I'm working with it. After 6 weeks of dealing with this I finally got fed up and decided to call support. They sent a technician out, having diagnosed the issue as being with the motherboard, but on arrival he advised me that in actual fact it was due to not having been provided with the correct power adapter in the first place.

He informed me that the adaptor i have (model: LA90PS1-00) is not designed to fit this laptop. It has a round port end which, whilst it fits into the socket as i say it does not stay, or feel like it fits quite right. I guess having paid somewhere in the region of a grand for my first decent laptop in years i was really hoping that everything would fit just as it should, not that i would have something not quite right. It's kinda marring my enjoyment of the machine.

Anyway tech support said they would arrange a call back to try and send a replacement, but i am not feeling very confident. They just seemed to want to question why only now after 6 weeks was it an issue (i guess i finally got tired of just dealing with the issue). The engineer who visited advised that the correct adaptor should have an octagon shaped end port, which would in turn fit much more snug into the laptop unit. The problem is i have looked on the website and can't seem to see any different AC adapters, let alone one with a octagon shaped fitting on the end.

I guess my question is has anyone else had a similar problem, or can anyone tell me what the model number for the correct AC adaptor is? I'm pretty convinced the engineer is right, as when you look at the ports it does seem obvious i am trying to fit a round peg in a square hole (well an octagon shaped  one at any rate?!), but i can't understand why they would send me the wrong adaptor in the first place, or why they would seem so confused by my request to get the right one.

Any advice, or comment would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi Wayne,

Exact same problem - round port end in a laptop unit that has an angular (octagonal) port. The fit isn't secure and keeps falling out. Dell, so far, haven't been helpful. They keep advising me that my warranty has expired, but this shouldn't be an issue as it's not a repair for a damage, but a fault on Dell's part. Anyway, I hope the problem has been solved for you.

Take care

I've got a Inspiron1545 - so the data of the powersupply might be different to your adapter!

Important: 65Watt(90Watt will do too...just more powerful) and most important:19.5Volt!!

I took 2 pictures of the label and the plug itself-have a look at it- it might give the technical support

some clue what to order for your system.

Hey, thanks for the reply, i had somewhat forgot this post still existed!

The pictures you posted are for the PA21, which is something i did stumble across on my journey, the only problem is it's only available in 65W, whereas the M1530 needs 90W power to run effectively.

The result i found was basically the charger I needed just doesn't exist - and Dell's technical support simply reiterated this to me - they had no solution. In the end they said it was the motherboard itself, which they changed - but to absolutely no improvement.

With this problem, combined with no workable sound drivers for windows seven, i just had enough of what was otherwise a great laptop. In the end i took the option of trading the unit in for a different model (at my own cost in terms of depreciation). It cost a little bit more, but i am far happier with my new model, and the power cable stays attached!

The reality was, as far as i'm concerned it was a manufacturing issue - putting a port on a machine then not providing a suitable power supply. As i say, a real shame given that the machine itself was otherwise fantastic.

I hope you have / or are having a better time reaching a solution than me.... Best of Luck!

Cheers.
