XPS M1710 Problem(s)

My XPS has been sent back for repairs 3 times and this last time they sent someone to my house. I work a lot so I haven't really had time to play or spend a long period of time on it, so everything has been good. I installed wow and a few other games this weekend and after about first 20 then 15 now 5 mins into playing, everything gets real choppy and glitchy, black and white glitchs. slows the computer down to the point you can't do anything.

I don't know what to do. Ive formated and reinstalled everything. They have replaced almost everything, the motherboard 2/3 times the video 2/3 times, memory a ton of times... This computer is costing me time/money/pain. Ive picked up a fax/scanner I can't use along with a new mouse and new games/prepayed cards to play the games I can't play. Its just really disappointing, I was hoping this time it would all be good.

So i guess my question is does anyone know what else it could be, the tech guy that fixed it said " maybe its not a video/ram/mainboard problem.. When I told him How i keep having the same problems( Pretty much) but What else could it be?

Looking over my laptop maybe it has something to do with the Case not being on right. Check this out. PhotobucketIts hard to make this last one out, but if you look where it says XPS/1710, seems the case it lifted a bit?

WINXP or VISTA? If vista:try installing XP and see whether it works then.

Seems like thermal problems to me. Check your fans. The paste on the processor might not be applied correctly.  Try playing on a tabletop which is smooth, don't play on any tablecloth or similar: that might impede airflow too much.
You can also try removing the bottom cover while playing. If it gives up then check whether the heatsink is only warm or hot. If it is hot (like the warm water tap opened alone), then something is wrong with the heat exhaust.
Have they replaced your CPU?

Im running XP, system gets really hot, reallllly hot

also dell replaced the video/motherboard/mem/fans/cd drive few other things, not the laptop its self.

Before I call again or email I just wanted to ask around here, I hate calling again about this..

Since it happens in games only, I would say its a heat problem.
Have you tried installing any program to monitor the fans and temperature
on CPU's and GPU?

If not this program might work for you:

Maybe the fans are not working correctly or it have problems
getting rid of the heat otherwise. It should be used on a flat
and hard surface and nothing should be in the way at the exit where
the fans are blowing out the hot air.

They didnt try changing the processor did they? That could also
cause problems if the thermal cooling fluid isnt applied properly
and the BIOS will try to correct for this by setting the
CPU speed down.

I forgot to ask.. are you using stock dell drivers for it? Not that I know much about the M1710 but my M170 has problems with other than stock dell drivers (well and with the newly released beta driver also)

Overheating issues.

It sounds really odd i think. If it had been me I would have sent it back to them
asking for a new laptop or my money back.

I dont think that it is acceptable that you have had so many parts changed and
still the problem isnt solved.

yeah everything but the video drivers when I try and install those it says its not compatible..

So I jumped on the site and got them

Sorry I didnt write it but I did mean the video drivers. With Nvidia reference drivers and even with the newly released Dell beta driver I get overheating problems. My M170 turns off though when playing games so not excactly the same as your problem.

Good luck with it. There is nothing worse having a computer that isnt stable.
