My Inspiron XPS is 3 weeks old, it ran great for 2 weeks and this week it started running like poop. My 3D Mark 01 scores dropped from 17661 to 11659 my Counter-Strike Source frame rates dropped by over 30fps. After talking to tech support and getting treated like an idiot, The tech tells me to format my harddrive. I have been in the computer business for 12 years and I tried to tell him this was a hardware problem but he insisted He couldn't do anything unless I format so I did, Problem not fixed So they send a tech 2 days later with a Mobo and a video card. The tech gutted my new laptop installed the parts, problem not fixed he says call Dell support. after an hour on hold I tell the tech I think this thing has a thermal problem but he doesn't believe it and wants me to send it in to them to have it looked at. After 30 more minutes I finally tell him if I send it back it will be for a refund or they can send me a new one. They finally agree to replace the unit. Now I'm concerned the new one will do the same thing. I have verified this to be a heat issue I can go out in my 40F garage and the laptop works perfect the 3D mark scores go back up and frame rates go back up, I come inside a 72F house and everything goes back to poop. The fans run at high even when it's at idle(indoors). I don't think it's the ATI 9800 oveheating I think it is the CPU or a thermal sensor but all the Dell diags say everything is OK. I'm glad I have a 4 year warranty.

yeah it could be ur settings, i mean to say ur envoronment. but sometimes the DELL people who build ur system mess up and waht they dont do is apply enuff of the thermal compund onto the CPU. this alone will help ur computer remain cooler.

After weeks waiting for them
they sent the technician that replaced the motherboard (he forgot a lot of screws)
and one fan >> so i still had overheating issue.

Finally I had to send my system for a repair

What i can tell you is >> this service is fast fast (3 days)

but when i received my system back
i checked the temp >> still the same right now i m just writing this message
and the cpu temp is 57C

Results thanks dell you make nice laptops, mine is nice etc ..
but i still can t use it

any suggestion ??????

I will try to get a refund because i m to tired and i can add
i m disgusted from dell tech support
they are simply not able to do there job

Also my hard drive is noisy noisy noisy
i must work with a headphone
they sent me a new one >> even more noisy

and whatever they say ....
I have 2 friends that have similar laptop
>> their work fine >> 43C idle and not more than 65 when a lot of process are runing
>> their are like silent no noise at all

again thanks dell a lot

Actually I have the same problem as you, except that currently my CPU Temp is at 66 deg, and i have barely anything running, under load it gets up to an easy 70+ deg... Don't know how to fix it yet though..

Yea I was thinking of doing that next week as well, also check for dust buildup and see how the connection is on the heatsink

I been having this same problem.  Where do you check the temp at?

I can get my xps to over heat when I dual log playing Dark Age of Camelot.  It gets fustrating when it does it every 20-30 minutes.  :(

I am thinking of calling Dell up and sending me a new one.

Well I had the dell guy come and replace all my fans and my cpu heatsink and well my idle temps are now around 60 deg c and under load it still goes up to 69-70.. He claimed the increase in temperature was due to the buildup of dust, however even after it was cleaned up and everything was replaced, the temps barely dropped. So it's not just dust thats causing this overheating issue.

It's what o try to explain them since now month 3exactely

I start to think it s
1 or a default in there way to build this laptop
2 or the processor itself
3 or the thermal censor

what you may do is to contact them to make a replacement
my experience is : technician coming and sending the laptop for a service repair >>>> useless
completely useless I went thru these steps maybe 15 times and at the end >> still the same
60C idle and 75C when process are running

What i also noticed is when i put my system on standby
when i restart it >> temp is going up to 80 and fans are crazy so I have to restart it

good luck with your system

mine >>> don t know what to do else
they will send me a new one in a few

and i ll be happy to post the final result

Arctic Silver will help. If you can get your idle temps around 55c you should be ok. It's just bad design. The Prescott CPU's run considerably hotter than Northwoods. Also as far as the fans going crazy there is a bios update that fixes that (A06).
