Install Java: http://java.sun.com

Sometimes it's the Java Runtime Environment that these programs need. As jwerfel said, install it from the downloads section of Sun's site.

The newest Windows XP versions do not come included with the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine.  I have a Windows XP disc from Dell from July 2003 and it has the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine.  The XP discs coming since Septemeber or October do not include it with the Windows XP install and I don't think it is on the disc.

You can however still download it off the internet from certain websites, however Microsoft has removed it from their site due to the legal settlements with Sun.  Some websites and software will run better with the Microsoft Virtual Machine installed rather than with Sun's versions.

Some stock companies, like Siebert's tech support for example, recommend that you use Microsoft's java instead of Sun's.

A search in google for "Microsoft Java Virtual Machine" "download" will turn up several sites to download it from.

NOTE that the 5.00.3810 is the latest version but it is only a upgrade, you must download the 5.00.3805 first then upgrade it to .3810.  At least the installers I downloaded required this.

You can normally find out if you have the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine installed if you go to Start:Run and type in wjview

*Windows XP SP1a is the same as Windows XP SP1 except that the Microsoft virtual machine (VM) is removed in SP1a - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813926
