1702FP flickering LEDs

Hello.  We have ~50 Optiplexs each with a 1702FP.  over the past few months.. 3 of them have developed the same problem.  The power LED flickers on and off, and the othe 2 LEDs alternate at a ratio of about 3:1 or possibly 2:1.  The screen is completely blank

This happens even when nothing but the power cable is plugged in.  I assume the monitor is bad, but why 3 of them in such a short time?  What does this flickering signify and how can I prevent it?  Is there any repairs that can be done?  I often repair electronics.

I am all for stock troubleshooting answers, but I don't think anything you posted applied to me.  I am searching for the cause of a very specific monitor problem that has occurred in a few monitors.  There is no computer cable attached, so checking it is not an option.  There is nothing on the screen when plugged in, so no Colorful Dell logo.  I want to verify that this thing is dead.

If I plug a 1702FP into the wall and nothing else, and get the symptoms I have already described, is it a faulty monitor, and if you can tell me... what exactly inside is going on?

adamdrayer,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Here are some things to try and resolve the issue with the monitor.

  • Ensure monitor is in proper video mode
  • Ensure video cable connection to computer and to the flat panel is secure
  • Perform monitor reset
  • Perform monitor self-test feature check to determine if the intermittent problem occurs in self-test mode

Setting the Optimal Resolution: Dellâ„¢ 1702FP Flat Panel Color Monitor User's Guide

For optimal monitor performance while using the Microsoft® Windows® operating systems, set the display resolution to 1280 x 1024 pixels by performing the following steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon in the Control Panel window, and then click the Settings tab.
  3. In the Desktop area, move the slidebar to 1280 by 1024 pixels. Then click OK.
  4. Recommended frequency for best performance is 60Hz.

NOTE: Though we do not officially support the UXGA video mode ( 1600 x 1200 @ 60Hz ), this monitor will display UXGA. Video performance could be impaired in this mode. The following message appears when in this mode "Cannot Display This Video mode". In the event the system is in UXGA mode, the user will still be able to view the screen in order to change the resolution to optimal.

Monitor Specific Troubleshooting

Self-Test Feature Check (STFC)

Your monitor provides a self-test feature that allows you to check whether your monitor is functioning properly. If your monitor and computer are properly connected but the monitor screen remains dark, run the monitor self-test by performing the following steps:

  1. Turn off both your computer and the monitor.
  2. Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer. To ensure proper Self-Test operation, remove both Digital(white connector) and the Analog(blue connector) cables from the back of computer.
  3. Turn on the monitor.

The floating 'Dell - self-test Feature Check' dialog box should appear on-screen (against a black background) if the monitor cannot sense a video signal and is working correctly. While in self-test mode, the power LED remains green and the self-test pattern will scroll through the screen continually.

This box also appears during normal system operation if the video cable becomes disconnected or damaged.
  4. Turn off your monitor and reconnect the video cable; then turn on both your computer and the monitor.

If your monitor screen remains blank after you use the previous procedure, check your video controller and computer system; your monitor is functioning properly.

Not sure if the monitors are still under warranty.. anyway I can tell?  I may have shifted them around and not know which monitor serial#s belong to which Computer/ServiceCode.

As for magnetism, I don't see anything magnetic that may be causing this. It's possible that these monitors stay on all the time though,  not sure if they overheat.

adamdrayer,

I wish I did have an answer as to why the monitors are failing. If you plugged it into the wall with the video cable unplugged and get nothing on the screen then, email support2dell.com and have it replaced. Do you have any devices next to the monitor that my have caused a magnetic interference and possibly caused the monitor to go bad?

adamdrayer,

If the systems were ordered with the monitors then, edit your user profile and add a service tag number from the system and I can look it up to see if it is still within the warranty period.

I have this same exact problem.  It started about 2 weeks ago for no apparent reason.

It appears from the flashing analog/digital leds that the monitor is unable to detect that there is a video signal being sent to it.  However, the flashing amber power led is a mystery to me.  There is nothing in the documentation that explains why this would be occurring.  My best guess is that the monitor is getting stuck in some mode where it is trying to detect the signal and it can't.

However, so far, if I unplug the DVI connector and plug the analog cable into my laptop, the monitor eventually comes out of this mode and starts displaying again.  Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing whether this will continue to work or not.  And it seems as though this happens frequently after my desktop computer puts the monitor into power save mode.  Sometimes it comes back on its own - though I usually see a quick Dell screen on the monitor indicating that the monitor has reset itself - before the actual screen redisplays.

Aside from this, the monitor seems to be working fine - I just don't know for how long.  Any input you could provide would be appreciated.

John
