The settings are personal preferences. It doesn't matter what other people use, you should use what looks best to you. If for some reason you don't trust your judgement, there are commercial program available for setting up monitors. In general contrast should be set so that the full range of intensities are represented and represented to their fullest (this is done automatically with a DVI connection) and brightness should be set for comfortable viewing based on the room lighting.
