2005fpw issue

I received my 2005fpw with my new 8400 about a week ago.  I have read all the posts about the back-light issue and I have to say that mine is really bad.  Has anyone received a 2005fpw that is a later rev than A0?  Is this a build defect or is it just a bad design?  I am happy the graphics quality on the monitor and am really happy with 8400 (these are my first DELL purchases - used Micron before) but the back-light is terrible.  I want to return the monitor but I am trying to decide if I should have them replace it with the other 21 inch LCD or with another 2005fpw.  I mean unless there is a new rev of these (A1? anyone) I am not sure if returning it will help as they all seem to be some-what defective....

some ppl have gotten monitors manufactured in November instead of October, but they are still displaying the colour problem.

I believe all REV A00 batch 0T6130 are defective.  I have gone through three of these and in the process of a FOURTH exchange due to TONS of dead pixels and backlight leakage.  I believe all those who claim they have perfect monitors might not know how to properly look for dead/stuck pixels (subpixels).

Hope Dell comes out with a REV A01 with these issues resolved.  Especially since my DELL UltraSharp 1703FP was a PERFECT monitor with no dead pixels or backlight leakage. :smileysad:

i agree, i dont think alot of ppl are testing sufficiently. the dell moderator Jesse wants me to do the below steps, i recommend you all do with monitor problems.

If you could email me your service tag number and also the ppid number (the serial number on the back of the monitor) i would appreciate that very much. we are collecting this information and passing it on. it is getting kind of too frequent. Hopefully, they will get a resolution soon. Please be patient with us on this issue. we are working on it!

Thank You
Jesse

I am glad to hear that Jesse is requesting information on this issue and Dell has recognized that the frequency is higher than the norm. My new monitor should be here tomorrow. I have read there is a download to use to check out the monitor can some direct me to the file please. Thanks.

Just checked my new monitor it has 2 on pixels that I dont notice during normal ops. It is Rev A00 Nov 2004 in Mexico. There is also an MX number but I am not sure if that is serial number. I have tried it out with a ATI 9800 Pro and NVidia Ti4600 and after loading the drivers all the resolutions work fine. I looked for the leakage and it maybe there but if I look straight on it is not bad. If I look at an angle it is bad. My old monitor is a Dell P1110 and I am gaining 1 Inch on the sides and losing about 1.5 Inches from the top. In the correct resolution I am really not missing much. U can open two programs side by side fully which is nice and at this resolution I can still see full pages in word. I hope this helps I will keep an eye on it and update if needed.

Hi all,

I recently ordered a 2005FPW (Rev A00, November) and have been experiencing the same backlight issues as others on this forum.  I just thought I'd contribute an additional picture so that the official folks at Dell can see how widespread this issue is: http://graphics.csail.mit.edu/~ehsu/tmp/backlight.jpg ... please excuse the weird color cast, my digital camera isn't great with white balance.  For comparison, I placed my laptop next to my 2005FPW: it has a few dead pixels, and the backlight isn't all that even (compared to the Ultrasharp screens on some of the Dell laptops I've seen, it's awful).  But compared to the 2005FPW -- wow.

I'm generally not one to be too picky about things like uneven backlights and dead pixels; I understand that's part of the disadvantage of getting an LCD.  But I think that this is definitely below the industry standard (a standard that Dell's other LCDs often exceed, from what I've seen).

I already have a replacement coming Monday (kudos to Sean at Dell's excellent email support) ... hopefully it'll be good.  But after reading the messages from people that have gone through five or six exchanges with no luck, I admit I'm not very optimistic.  Anyway, I guess another thing I wanted to say to those out there that were still considering a purchase: when I was first considering this monitor, I read some reviews and heard about the backlight issues.  I initially thought the folks that were complaining were just overly picky and didn't understand that most LCDs have this minor issue.  But my 2005FPW exhibits this to an abnormal and intolerable degree.  And from everything that I have read, it's far too common.

And for those at Dell that may be reading: there is something inherently wrong if a significant number of your customers are hoping to receive a good sample of a product, rather than expecting one.

1. I have a 2005FPW that has a manuf date of Dec. 2004. I don't notice anything wrong with it. What are the symptoms of this backlight issue? I'll check and report back.

2. I can't get a rotation tab to appear in my video card (Radeon x600) properties dialog. Even with the latest driver installed(Nov. 2004) and even after using the drivers on the accompanying Dell CD (June 2004). Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Mark

Coderblix,

They are telling me that the 2005fp monitor replacements are fine. If you are experiencing the backlight leakage on this monitor you may want to contact Dell and get the monitor replaced.

Jesse,

Can you shed some light on the o/s orientation problem I'm having with my Radeon x600 card not showing up with a rotation tab in its advanced properties dialog? It's a brand-new Compaq box that I'm trying to use with the Dell 2005FPW. Can I just use a keyboard combo or something? Thanks.

tabcourt1,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

That has to do with a video card driver. You may want to do a search on the ATI website for some portrait/lanscape drivers.
