2007 WFP USB Ports

I have an e510 paired with an Ultrasharp 2007WFP monitor.  I am very pleased with the setup and the display.  I recently moved my home office and spread out a little farther, having to reconfigure everything to fit on my new desk.  I had been using the USB ports on the monitor for my MS Optical Mouse and a Maxtor USB Mini Drive.  Due to my new setup, I had to start using one of the USB ports for my printer.  I only use the Mini Drive occassionally, so I hadn't tried it until last night.  The drive would not work in either of the ports on the side of the monitor.  I moved the printer to one of the side ports, and plugged the drive into one of the ports on the bottom of the monitor.  It worked fine from there.  The drive pulls both data and power from the USB port.

I'm just curious, evidently the ports on the monitor are different.  I thought they were all the same.  Is this not the case?  I know that some provide power, and some do not, which is apparently the case here.  I can and will run my system with it configured as I now have it, I'm just curious about the ports.

jb122,

First, you have the monitor USB uplink cable connected to a USB port on the rear of the e510, correct? Second, does the Mini Drive function on all of the e510 front and rear USB ports?

The drive functions on the ports on the front of the e510, I've never tried it on the back ports.

Yes, the monitor uplink cable is plugged into the monitor and the back of the e510.  The drive functions on the two ports available at the bottom edge of the monitor, but will not work on either port on the side of the monitor.  I have my mouse connected to the other port on the bottom edge of the monitor, and my Canon Photo printer is being fed from one of the ports on the side of the monitor.  It all works now, it's just odd that the ports seem to be different.
