2007FP shimmering when connected through DVI
Hi,
I have received my new 2007FP monitor a month ago, and since the beginning it has shown shimmering - noise that looks like lines and dots randomly jumping at the screen. This only happens over the DVI cable, VGA seems to work fine. I have tested it with 2 video cards (NVidia 7300GT and ATI HD3850), and the issue occurs on both. Initially, the problem was happening in all video modes, including the native 1600x1200@60Hz. By trial and error, I have managed to partially reduce the issue in WinXP by playing with settings in both cards' drivers. For NVidia, I had to switch it into reduced blanking mode, and for ATI uncheck the "Alternate DVI operational mode". However, this didn't solve the problem entirely: shimmering still occurs in other video modes - for example, 1280x1024@60Hz, even in text console right after the boot. And it often also happens, when the display switches from one mode to another - in this case I need to turn the monitor off and back on.
Things have been even worse, when I tried to set it up for Linux, as there are no such settings in the video cards' drivers. However, by studying about this "blanking mode" that NVidia driver seems to like, I have found out a way to define a video modeline for X that proved to also eliminate the issue.
I have tried replacing the DVI cable, and this removed the shimmering in console mode for the ATI card, but not in other modes and not for NVidia.
I have also tried updating the drivers: ATI's were up to date, and after updating NVidia's drivers, the reduced blanking mode stopped working (probably a bug in the driver update).
I imagine this behavior isn't normal, so my questions are:
1. Has anyone else seen this before?
2. What could be the problem?
3. Is it worth going over the replacement headaches for this?
Thanks.

If you would consider this shimmering to be almost a flickering or wave of pulsing lines going down your monitor then join the club!!

Don't worry, Dell will do nothing to help. The replacement you send for will be a refurb (despite multiple technicians guaranteeing that it would be a new monitor) and you can count on the used monitors being even worse.
