2007(wfp) A02 - difference between desktop etc. modes?
So, after the A02 the banding has been fixed for desktop mode or whatever it was named, but those other modes still have the banding problen.
What I - and probably many others aswell - want to know is that how good that mode is compared to those other modes. How well it suits for gaming and for movies? Do you see any difference when swithcing from one mode to another? And is that the mode reviewers usually have used or have they changed the mode for different tests?
Since the faroujda is disabled, according this http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/downloa...962H%202407.pdf there should be huge amount if disadvantages. And if I understand correctly, PIP doesn't work with desktop mode?
And when those noise reductions etc. are disabled, it looks worse in sd-TV use?

I've read that in Multimedia mode, the monitor will add top and bottom bars to a 16:9 input from a non-PC source (since a PC/Windows would add the bars itself). As you've probably noticed too, each mode has it's own brightness/contrast/color settings. My Desktop mode brightness is on 0 (too bright for eyes) and I often change to Gaming mode if a game comes out too dark even with max brightness in the game settings. Much simpler then changing the brightness on the monitor every time. Ofcourse I wouldn't have to if the ATI drivers did their job.
Your link has been abbreviated and is not a link so it doesn't work. But from a quick look at a Faroudja article, I too wondered about loss of quality from losing other Faroudja functions but it was never apparent. Also, a lot of it, say DCDi for example, can be (and may already be) done in software with filters and stuff. I remember seeing similar looking pics of ATI AVIVO and nVIdia PureVideo doing similar things.
Where did you get that PIP mode not working thing from? :smileyindifferent:
This may or may not help, but look at these photos are I took when running a Digital Set Top box with my monitor over RGB and S-Video inputs, and over S-VIdeo input the three modes are completely different (Theatre/Sports/Nature instead). I don't know if the Faroudja is still enabled in Theatre mode.

ACC/ACM and the image modes are primarily intended to compensate for video content that has color and contrast optimised for CRT television displays.

The difference in modes doesn't seem that great to me. It's like the variations in color & contrast seen between different TV programs. You can tolerate some variation before you start playing with settings.
However, if you want the benefit of color/contrast presets for watching video or gaming, but don't want to put up with the banding in those modes, you could create similar presets in your graphics card driver and use 'Desktop' mode for everything.
