2007WFP Flat Panel - solid grey windows in Java applications

I have connected my new Dell 2007WFP Flat Panel monitor to my Dell Optiplex 170L, and my Java applications launch with the title bar OK but the rest of the window is solid grey and I cannot work with them.

Sometimes, maximising and then minimising the window displays the window correctly but not always. Reducing the resolution of the monitor makes the windows display OK, but only the highest resolution is practical.

The display adapter is the Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller. I have upgraded the driver for the display adapter.

I have installed the driver that came with the monitor, and confirmed that this is the latest one.

I have upgraded to Java 1.6 (originally had 1.4.2, and tried 1.5).

The Optiplex doesn't have a DVI port.

Has anyone else had this problem? Have I missed anything important?!

The integrated graphics controller might be struggling to run at your optimal resolution (1680x1050).  I can't speak for windows, but I've been doing a significant bit of programming in Ubuntu (FF) with as many as 6 GUI windows and haven't had any issues on the same monitor you are experiencing the problems with.

Thanks very much for your reply - I was starting to suspect that I'd need to get a different video card for my PC. :-(

If you're not too concerned with gaming or shader heavy 3d apps, a low end mid range card might be just fine (and yo can pick them up for under 100 dollars).
