2007WFP, my thoughts...
Hi there people.
I have been following the 2007WFP saga on these forums for the last 3 months, and continually come back to check on the latest posts.
When the 2007WFP was first announced, I like many of you, fell head over heels in love with this new good looking panel. It was only to be released in South Africa in July, so I was quite anxious to see the banding issue resolved before purchasing the unit.
I am by no means an expert on LCD panel technology, but as a “Power User/Gamer”, I extensively research any technology purchase thoroughly before pulling the trigger. Price is obviously the main factor for me, Dell’s prices are generally excellent for what you get, isn’t it one of the main reasons why we bought this panel?
I work daily with Dell LCD panels and must say that when my A02 “made in Czech Republic” 2007WFP arrived a few days ago, I was floored! I, like many of you, will use the “Desktop Mode” since I am normally wary of any image ‘post-processing’ that I have little or no control over. I believe that if you have a decent video card, all the necessary adjustments can be handled by it, even DVD de-interlacing using Nvidia’s Pure Video or ATI’s AVIVO technologies.
I think people need to make a distinction between features that they required and paid for and features the manufacturer added as “value adds’. I’ve read many posts here complaining that the banding was only fixed in Desktop mode, when we have paid for all 3 modes. Did any of these original purchasers know that this panel had a Faroudja post processing chip before purchasing? Was this an implicit requirement for this purchase? In most cases no. If you need the chip to work for your specific needs, you have it. If you prefer to calibrate and adjust your image yourself, you can. Dell has obviously erred on the side of caution, not wanting to alienate either user.
Granted, the replacement process for the A00 owners was far from perfect, causing frustration among many. But ask yourself this, would most other manufacturers acknowledge the ‘glitch’ and implement a fix as quickly as Dell has? Even though it was technically not their fault? Would they have tasked a forum moderator, ChrisM, to co-ordinate the replacement effort with the close co-operation of so many concerned users? You could perhaps argue that it was because of all the useful discussion on this forum, that Dell could respond quickly. They basically had all the info they could ever want.
Recently, Dell has been making a conscious shift towards the Gaming/Multimedia power users with their XPS range and the acquisition of Alienware. Their Core market continues to be the big corporates, but they are slowly recognizing the benfits of making high-end products for those multimedia and gaming users.
Is this panel High-End? Price wise no, feature wise yes. It is truly a bargain for what you get.
Dell recognized the success of the previous generation 2x05 FPW range of LCD’s and obviously wanted to add better ergonomics, better aesthetics and better picture quality. The latter didn’t come off well, but isn’t the Faroudja chip supposed to be a high end video processor? Hmmm…
Anyway, as we all should know, LCD panel technology in itself is imperfect. There are manufacturing concerns, uniformity issues, etc… This is the reality now, we can only hope that the powers that be can give us panels of CRT quality, in a flat panel form factor that everyone will be happy with. Or am I being naïve in saying that everyone would be happy?
My particular panel isn’t perfect, and I did not expect it to be either. It has a slight uniformity issue on the right hand side next to the bezel. But I can only notice it when I scrutinize the panel close up. Viewing angles are excellent with this S-IPS panel, but this was never an issue for me, as I am one of those strange people that sit in front of their screens!
I will not be using this panel to watch DVD’s or HD material, as I have a 50 inch Pioneer 5060 Plasma panel for that! ;)
Playing games, such as Half Life 2, FEAR, Quake 4, Call of Duty 2 and NFS Most Wanted is an absolute pleasure on the native resolution. I am no HardCore gamer, but the colour reproduction is excellent (something I value more than response times), while I have noticed no motion lag either.
For the 2007WFP users out there with the A02 or even A01 versions, be proud of your astute purchase. For those still on the fence, what are you waiting for? Pull that trigger now, you will have no regrets! For those still waiting for their replacements, be strong, I’m sure you will eventually have a panel in your possession that satisfies your requirements.
Thanks for reading!!

Wow, what were you thinking when you wrote this post ? That monitor is garbage, and if Dell, by way of telling everyone that they go through a tough testing process before the hardware leaves the shipping docks, than Dell dropped the ball. You only get one Mode, not three, that you paid for. The key word is "PAID FOR". Light leakage is another glitch, not to mention that many still have banding issues in the desktop mode, and you want everyone just to forget this, and buy one. What is the heck were you thinking ?
My future wide screen LCD will not have these issues, or it goes back

As the title of this post suggests, these are MY thoughts, and MY opinion on MY monitor. Don't attack my opinion because it doesn't align conveniently with yours.
When you talk about people still having banding in desktop mode, are you talking about the 2407 or the 2007 or both? As far as I can tell, the majority of 2007WFP A02 owners are happy, while the 2407 A02 owners still have ongoing issues...
Surely this forum is here for people to share experiences and communicate with eachother in a positive manner. Disregarding my opinion and asking "what were you thinking?" (errmm, I just posted what I was thinking) is shortsighted to say the least. But then again, this is just my opinion hey?

By reading all the complaints on this monitor board, about both the 2407, and 2007 monitor, I would not recommend any of them, and to have someone tell me to jump on it or such, is trying to push a monitor on me, when most of the posts are in the opposite direction of them being worthy of a purchase.
I've read the other posts and threads, and no way would I purchase one when they are still defective. You paid for all three Modes, no banding, and no light leakage, and that is what I would look out for. Some don't care to have a better monitor, but I do.....Yep, you have an opinion, but keep it to yourself and not push it on others. Read the posts about others that have issues.

Banding is now fixed in desktop mode and that would be good enough for me. The monitor has three things going for it that practically all of it's competition in it's price range falls down on at least one of:
1: Excellent stand/packaging with vertical/horizontal mode.
2: Input connectivity abundance.
3: S-IPS screen for the best real world viewing angles.
#3 is of critical importance to me, I can't stand the tone shifting on VA screens. I would buy this screen in a heartbeat if it were 4:3 1600x1200.
Here is where I rag on Dell. The 2007FP should have been exactly what I want, the 4:3 version of the WFP. It was initially an LG S-IPS screen, but dell just randomly changes screens without telling customers. I got the PVA screen I hate, but luckily it was blurry/banding so I could return for a full refund.
Dells behavior with regard to switching screen types like there is no difference is a huge PITA. This behavior just plain bites and there is no real excuse for it. Change the screen, then change the model number so the customer can have some clue what they are getting.

Each person will have to weigh in on whether they will accept a defective monitor that was advertised to have been tested, and being sold with all three modes, and additional connectivity. This is not the case with those problems, and some flicker as has been reported, and finally that famous light leakage. Still many have had on going problems with Banding, and other issues, if you all would just read up on those posts. Thanks, but no thanks for me, and many others. We have been sold a bill of goods that is not being delivered with these monitors. Perhaps in the very near future, another model will come out, like the newer 22 inch that has been reported to be on the horizon.
If I'm going to pay for a monitor that is advertised to have so, and so, then by golly it better have them, and they better work. I am not that much of a fool to give in to a monitor that has issues, that many have reported even after the revision. If you want to accept these limitations with an expensive monitor, go for it. Thank you, but no thanks. A fool is born everyday. I'm not going to be one of them. I'll watch and wait for the monitor that actually works as advertised.

I bet you are quite pleased when another user complains about this panel, but God forbid if someone likes it...

I said 2007 was now fixed. Not 2407, which isn't.

Correct, we are talking about the 2007WFP, not the 2407WFP which still has unresolved issues. My previous posts also make a distinction between the two...
