2100FP, DVI, ATI, Linux: how to avoid the power save defect

I have read with great concern the official Dell FAQ for the DVI power save issue, which tells ATI owners to check boxes in their driver options. That's great for people using Windows, but what about those of us who run Linux? I have an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro, and I'm using the X.org radeon driver - can't use the ATI proprietary drivers because I have an Athlon 64.

Should I just send the 2001FP back now and save myself a whole lot of future headache, or is there a reasonable work-around I can employ to avoid this product defect?

Is there a known way to intentionally trigger the problem? That would help me figure out whether I have a reasonable work-around now, rather than some painful later.

Thanks!

cmetzlore,

I have WinXP and had the same issue with my 2001FP and an ATi 9800np which I was able to correct using the Dell FAQ fix. Since it appears that ATi does not furnish a Control Panel with its Linux drivers (which is how the Windows-based fix is employed), you may need to contact ATi to see how to accomplish the same thing w/o a Control Panel if you have the problem. First, this issue doesn't arise with every panel. Second, if it is an issue with your panel, you'll know about it immediately b/c its not a problem that comes and goes but manifests itself early on. Lastly, there's no way that I know of to trigger it...from what I've read in the various forums, no one seems to know why it even occurs.

Hope this helps,

Tom
