2405 FPW NOT RECOGNIZING DVI BY COMPUTERS OR CABLE BOX - PLEASE HELP

I could really use some help here. I can't figure out why my monitor won't recognize the DVI input. Here is my setup:

- Mac Mini 1.42 GHZ running OS X 10.4
- Motorola Digital Cable Box

What work - The Mac Mini works w/ a VGA (D-SUB) output to the Dell Monitor & it shows up as 1920 x 1200. The picture is fuzzy though acceptable. The Cable Box is connected via component audio / video. This makes for a very reasonable PIP setup w/ the monitor. Removes an old TV from my already crammed office space.

What doesn't work - The DVI connection from either is not recognized. If I try to press the power button (on the computer) or any key, DVI is still not activated. Switching back to other configurations (like D-SUB/VGA) will work fine if I press a key or press the power button the mini-mac.

I've spent about a week messing with this & I am at wits end. Can anybody give me some ideas of what to do at this point??

Thanks in advance,
Bob

It's a mac.... I'd say try it with a PC with a proper DVI output. Apple always does proprietary stuff that makes their hardware ALMOST work with PC equipment. As for the cable box, most of the time the DVI outputs are locked down by default. You'll have to yell scream and beg your cable company to turn it on, but they probably won't. Just because the port is there doesn't mean it's turned on.

Yeah, it's a neutered mac. Go buy a PC man...

Your mac mini doesn't have the gusto to put out 1900x1200 dvi... Strike one for Apple.

As far as the feed from the Motorola Cable box - You're dead. The Cable boxes utilize HDCP content protection when you hook up to either the output DVI connector or an HDMI connector. (The Motorola boxes come with one or the other) The box looks for an HDCP "Handshake" from the TV - Your monitor (just like my 2405!) does not provide the handshake, so it turns off the DVI or HDMI port on the box. You might be able to split the Component out RCA jacks and feed that signal into the 2405. That works on mine but there is some signal degradation. The DVI port on my 2405 works great with the Dimension 9100 DVI output (An ATI PCIx card) but even with the Hauppage tuner card, the XP Media Center TV output quality is nothing to write home about! By the way, for the few seconds before the Cable box shut down the DVI port, it did feed my HDTV signal to the 2405 DVI port resulting in some beautiful picture quality on the 2405 - Then dumped to black. Arrrgh!  When I spoke to Dell support about it, they told me I should have bought one of their TVs. Gee, Thanks!
