2405 zoom / scale functionality

I'm a little bit disappointed that the 2405fpw doesn't support aspect-preserving scaling for component inputs.  Basically what I want to do is fill the screen with the HDTV signal from my cable box, but instead of just stretching it to eliminate the black bars at the top and bottom (for 1080/720) or left and right (480), I want to zoom in so that the aspect ratio is preserved and not forced to 16:10.  I know that some of the image will be cropped a bit, but that's ok.  I just can't stand a distorted aspect ratio.  Anyone have any thoughts on how this might be acheived (possibly even through additional external hardware?)

I was looking into transcoders that will convert component to VGA, and support scaling up to 1900x1200, but they're super-expensive (i.e., > $1000).

Any help/thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes, I'd like an answer to that as well, considering I can't get ANY help from Dell about how to make my video inputs display even 4:3 properly, they display at 1.5:1 instead of 1.33:1. Customer service keeps refering me to the manual, like I haven't read it five times!

This is a major issue for me as well. I can't use the composite/component/s-video inputs without 4:3 images looking short and fat, or 16:9 images looking tall and thin.

Customer service didn't know what 'aspect ratio' meant, and apparently didn't understand that I wasn't even using the computer as despite my protests, kept insisting I should update the drivers and reboot the computer.

I consider this a serious problem and hope that someone with some technical understanding of this issue will see and reply to this thread.

I actually had them send a replacement monitor, exactly the same problem, obviously a DESIGN flaw.  I'm sending both back as I can't stand watching the defective video.  I suspect the only real solution is to fork over the extra $500 and buy the SAMSUNG 243T, which actually displays video CORRECTLY.  ARE YOU LISTENING DELL?

Well this explains why noone has a solution. On their end it isn't actually a problem. x.x does anyone know if there's a way into the service menu of the 2405? Maybe something can be done from there.

it seems the SAMSUNG 243T doesn't have s-video or component inputs though, so that would defeat the purpose here :(

Hey, sorry, I meant the Samsung 244T, it does everything.  I think it even has a built in tv tuner.  And I've seen the "street" price as low as $1500.  Gonna have to try that next, since Dell won't even respond to my problem.  They have no idea how much money they're gonna lose, since I'll never buy from them again, with such lousy support and false advertising of their product's capability.
