2407 + Farajouda DCDi + DVI?

I know that this has been linked to a more technical FAQ in a previous thread, but why did Dell make a concious design decision to put DCDi processing into the new 2407 monitor?

I have recently purchased a 2407 (Rev A02) and also seem to have the banding problems that everyone else has here. I had chosen this model based on the fine heritage of the previous 2405 model which I also own, and have not had any of the problems I seem to be having with a model that is supposedly its successor!

I also have access via work to a Gateway 20" widescreen that also boasts Farjouda processing. After hooking it up via DVI and running some tests I was pleased to see that no horizontal or vertical banding was evident in normal Desktop mode. What I was surprised at was that the monitor would not let me access any other entertainment or gaming mode while I was connected via DVI. Apparently the additional image processing was limited to VGA and Svideo. This beg's the question why Dell has chosen to implement this processing technology over DVI, and what are the *theoretical* benefits this gives an end user who is using DVI?

Perhaps they figured it would help upscale non-native resolutions, such as playing non-native resolution games or video in full screen (stretched) mode. This is only a guess, really it should probably have never been enabled in DVI mode, at least that's what I've heard.

Are you saying that DCDi is related to gradient banding or are you referring to other issues? Banding is caused by ACC/ACM. DCDi and ACC/ACM are just some of the various Faroudja technologies integrated in the panel controller. They all serve different purposes. Have a look here and the links to the Genesis site:

May not answer your questions but might help.

The thought that it might never have been meant to be enabled in DVI mode occurred to me as well. I really do wish I had stumbled upon these forums before ordering and receiving my 2407(A02) as it seems that Dell still has a way to go to work the bugs out of this monitor. Gathering a general feel from a lot of the posts, it seems that the addition of this technology has become the fatal flaw of the current revisions we suffer with.

Use the monitor in DVI mode, and the processsing causes unwanted image degredation.

Use the monitor via component, and no processing seems evident due to the posts of dark and generally lackluster performance that can't be adequetely tweaked.

Use the monitor in VGA mode, and give up the ability to display HDCP content which was one of the carrots the was dangled before me to entice an upgrade to begin with.

That's why I posed the question as to why the decision, or what tangible benefit does DCDi offer the consumer?
