With the PS3 on and connected to the monitor HDMI, open the monitor OSD (On Screen Display). What resolution is listed at the very bottom of the display?
Unplug the HDMI from the monitor and connect to the TV. Make sure the PS3 is set to 1080p. While the monitor is on, re-plug the HDMI cable into the monitor. What appears?
* This issue has nothing to do with the monitor or the HDMI cable. The PS3 is stuck in 480p mode. With both the monitor and PS3 on and using the HDMI cable, power Off the PS3 via the power switch in the back and then power it back on with that rear switch. Hold the Power Button on the front of the PS3 until you hear 3 beeps. Once it powers up, the screen should display a message something like, "An HDMI cable has been detected, do you want to set it up?".
* When you go through the setup for setting up HDMI, you will need to check the boxes of which video output modes your monitor supports (720p, 1080p).
* After you go through the intial HDMI setup and your PS3 is displaying through the HDMI cable, on the PS3's main menu, go to Settings and then scroll down to Display Settings. In Display Settings, put the RGB Full Range (HDMI) on Full and put Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI) to On.
I just tested my 2709w with PS3 and I have no problem changing it to HDMI 1080p. Make sure only HDMI was connected from your Monitor to PS3. Go to display settings and select HDMI and select only 480i and 1080p.
For Troubleshooting try this
Try first if you can make 1080p works with Component (RGB) cable?
Can your monitor work on 720p with PS3 via HDMI?
Do you have any other DVD player that work with HDMI and 1080p? Try this on the monitor.

It say 720*480 on the OSD.
Added.
When I try to add display mode in PS3 nothing works other than 480p on the monitor with HDMI. But it works on my TV.

I have exactly the same problem. The 480p is coming from the composite out of the PS3.
For me, it doesnt recognise the PS3 HDMI connection at all. Monitor goes into sleep mode.
I've also used the ps3 on my tv in 1080p.

I've tried this and the message it comes up with is "HDMI Cable has been detected, do you wish to use this ?"
I accepted and it goes back to the power saving screen when I go onto HDMI option on monitor.
It was then stuck in HDMI mode and I had to reset PS3 back to composite to get a picture.
I've setup the hdmi options on PS3 as you said via composite ready for HDMI connection, but this doesnt make a difference either.
