Auto Adjust in Progress - E172FP

I've never had a single problem with my monitor (E172FP) until today. This morning I started up my computer, everything loads as normal, and I started surfing the internet. Next thing I know, my monitor starts going crazy with the constant "Auto Adjust in Progress" message & my screen "shaking" as it adjusts itself over and over again. I've been using this monitor since I bought the computer, and haven't switched the graphics card since last year around this time. This is a constant thing, and has only happened once while the computer was booting. The only changes I've made recently were the addition of a DVD-/+RW burner and a Logitech corded optical mouse yesterday. Even after installing those, it worked fine all day yesterday and last night.

I uninstalled the monitor driver & reinstalled it (both from the disk I got with the computer & then with one I downloaded from Dell's web site). I then updated my graphics card driver (hadn't realized it was outdated). I uninstalled that and reinstalled it again. Each time I installed, uninstalled, or reinstalled something I restarted the computer. I switched the plugs from the "blue" plug to the "white" plug. After doing some searching, I found a few places that said to get to the "Shutdown" screen a few time and press the + button to manually adjust it. I even tried to update my BIOS. None of these things have worked.

Here are some specs on my computer:
Dimension 4600i
EVGA eGeForce 7600GS (AGP)
Windows XP Home
1 gig of RAM
Pentium 4 2.8GHz

If anyone has any kind of idea how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it. I consider myself pretty proficient when it comes to computers, but this has got me stumped.

Update: I'm now also getting a new message when my computer is shutdown. It says something about being in Power Save Mode & to press any key on keyboard or move mouse. This started late last night when I shutdown my computer.

Well with no help here, I was able to figure out the problem; my monitor is simply broken. It seems that the + button has some sort of wiring/physical issue, where it goes off on it's own. The + button is the button to press when you want to Auto Adjust the screen, as well as the button to press in order to get the "Power Save Mode" message on the screen when the computer is off or in standby/hibernate modes. I haven't moved my monitor since I bought the computer (years ago), and there's never anything close enough to it to hit it hard. Clearly this is either a poor wiring or poor design issue. Seeing as this is old (at least in electronics & computer terms), hopefully Dell has found a better manufacturer to make their monitors for them.

Cleanincubus,

My apologies for the monitor failure. I take it the warranty has expired?

Yeah, unfortunately the warranty expired about a year or 2 ago.

I have had the same issue with my monitor on occassion and have found that, in my case, if I power the monitor off and then press and hold the + button while turning the power back on the auto adjust problem is solved.

Another way is to disconnect the monitor, replace it with another monitor, start the computer, shut it down, and reconnect the original monitor.  This is has the effect of putting in the proper driver for your monitor.

This problem can also be fixed by going into Device Manager. and  updating  the  monitor driver.
