auto adjust in progress

My screen saver is set to come on after 30 minutes and my monitor is set to go to sleep after 45 minutes. When I move my mouse to wake up the monitor I get the following message in the middle of my monitor. The desktop is there, everything is okay, I just get that message in a small black rectangle. I have never gotten it before yesterday.  What happened now?

lindapolovchik,

List all the software and/or hardware changes made to the system BEFORE this issue arose. List all the troubleshooting steps you have taken.

No software changes have been made since the end of April when I uninstalled Norton Internet Security and downloaded the FREE McAfee Secuity Suite from Comcast. No hardware changes other than changing my surge protector, but that was after it started yesterday. It happened after our lights blinked on and off. When I came home, all the clocks were blinking and the desktop was off, but the monitor was asleep and the speakers were on. That's because I left the desktop on when I left the house. Nothing is ever done to this computer except me checking email, downloading photos and emailing them to my family. My son has a laptop to play games on.

I think it must be related to the lights blinking the other day. I did a system restore which totally messed up McAfee, so I undid that. If I press the menu button on the monitor, there is an auto adjust option, but I haven't a clue what it means. Possibly, somebody other than myself changed the pixel resolution, because it mentioned the optimum pixels and what mine is set at. It doesn't look any different than what I am  accustomed to viewing. When you get older, you need things a bit larger to make like easier on you. What would a good screen resolution be for the 17" monitor E173 with a Radeon X300 video card?

lindapolovchik,

The E173FP default resolution should be 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz.

I tried that and it is much too small for me. My monitor has never been set there. Thanks anyway.

lindapolovchik,

Regardless of the resolution, it should still wake up without doing an autoadjust. You should reinstall the video card drivers and see if the issue continues. Go here for the Radeon instructions.

It stopped. Go figure! I wiggled the mouse to wake up the monitor and the desktop appeared without the auto adjust message. I rebooted and when the screen went to black no auto adjust message. I will keep in mind the recommendation to reinstall the video card drivers if it occurs again. Right now, the deck around the pool is consuming us, so we just want to go to the deck plan site and look at plans, photos and forums there. I will hope just for a bit longer it is okay, so I don't add more confusion for myself. Thanks Linda
