can't unlock OSD on P992 - conventional method doesn't work

Last night, I powered off my P992 for the first time in, well... I don't remember. Normally, monitor simply goes to sleep each night when I power down the system. When I turned the monitor on this morning, one look at the screen and I realized my custom settings had been lost. But when I tried to access the settings, a green key symbol appeared on the lower-left screen.

Referring to the Users Guide, the OSD should still be accessible even when locked, but navigation is limited to the unlock toggle. In my case, pressing the menu button only illuminates the green lock symbol! That's not supposed to happen, according to the Users Guide. The Guide also says that pressing the down arrow will unlock the monitor. But in my case, that doesn't work. In fact, pressing any of the five buttons (plus/minus/up/down/menu) illuminates the green key symbol.

An hour on the phone with tech support produced no satisfaction. One thing he had me do was hold down the menu button for over two minutes. Other than bring up the monitor's serial number, nothing happened. Same with holding the down arrow for a couple of minutes. The tech couldn't find any explanation or solution but agreed to research and call me on Monday.

Perhaps someone here can help?

Perhaps, but it sounds like you've done all the right things and nothing has helped so far. It may just be... broke.  At worst case, let us know what Dell tells you on Monday.

Is the monitor still covered under a warranty?

No warranty.

When I searched this forum for similar reports, I found none for the P992 but I did find at least a couple of reports on this same problem on other monitors. Unfortunately, neither of the two messages I found had a response. There were simply too many hits to check them all...

As is, the monitor is just a few notches to dark. Looks better if I turn off the light in my office :-)
