If you have set the optimal resolution for your monitor as suggested in the manual, then nothing should be stretched. Which monitor are you using?

I have the 2007WFP monitor and unfortunately Dell don't offer an option to buy an English PC in Spain, so everything's in Spanish, therefore I can't read the manual that came with it.

Thanks very much for your help, but the optimal resolution of 1680 x 1050 is unacceptable as it makes everything too small! I'll know to buy a normal width monitor next time.

I've found the solution that works best for me is to use the menu buttons on the monitor and change the wide mode to a different aspect ratio, but unfortunately the monitor doesn't save the setting, so every time I restart I have to go through the somewhat long process again. It's a shame, because on the grounds of quality, this monitor is spectacular and I'm reluctant to change it for another, but it doesn't my needs since I work with images a lot, so will probably have to :smileysad:

I have one and love it. You could try setting a custom resolution of 1440x900, but the loss of sharpness from interpolation would probably be unacceptable.
