Compact Flash Reader Problems on a 2405FPW

Hi folks,

I'm having a problem with a Dell 2405FPW 24-inch LCD monitor 9-in-1 Flash card reader on side of the display. It stopped reading my compact flash cards. I've tried rebooting the system, changing cables, inserting usb cable into another system and still the same problem. My Windows XP loads the USB device (which creates 4 new hard drives) but when I try to insert my compact flash card (I have 3 cards made by various vendors), all of the USB devices (the 4 hard drives) disappear and nothing else happens. If I insert a MMC card, then it reads it fine w/ no problems. It seems there is a problem w/ only the Compact flash slot. Any ideas where I can get support? Dell phone support is a joke! Was on hold for almost 50 minutes to find out that I was transfered to the wrong department. Then I was transfered again and onhold for another 40 mintues before I gave up. :-(

Thanks,

SW

Stevewest15,

Can you read the CF card on another computer with a different card reader?

Yes, I can read all three cards w/ no problems. I'm only having a problem w/ the built-in reader on the LCD monitor. I've tested the SD card slot and there is no problem reading from it...so I'm left to believe there is something wrong w/ the CF slot.

Thanks,

Stevewest15,

If you can read the CF card on a completely different system, then your diagnosis is correct - the CF reader slot on the monitor has failed.  Look inside it and be sure that there is nothing in there which would cause a bad connection for the CF card itself.  Be sure that there are no bent pins.  To have the monitor replaced will require that you contact the Dell Techies either by phone or by chat to validate your troubleshooting and arrange for a replacement monitor.

Thanks on the info. I've just looked at the CP slot and sure enough one of the pins is out of alignment and touching another pin. I'm not sure if I can reach it with anything to move it back to place.

I tried contacting support via phone and was put on hold forever before I was told I had to be transfered again. :-( Tried the chat service, but it won't allow me to chat without a service tag. This monitor does NOT have a service tag anywhere! It's really frustrating.

Stevewest15,

If you attempt to straighten the pins, be sure that ALL connections to the display are removed.
