Connecting two external monitors to my Alienware 17x R3 laptop

I want to connect two monitors to my laptop (for a total of three including the laptop screen).  I would prefer to use the mini displayport just to have fewwer wires etc.  Is there a mini display port to dual HDMI or dual DVI cable?  Or alternatively I have a dvi splitter cable.

Also I thought I read that the display port interface was limited to a resoloution that would not handle two 1920x1080 monitors but I also saw something about 1,2 or 4 "lanes".  Will my suggested configuration not be able to handle the two 1080 monitors?  Or what would you suggest?

I have a  1 GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6870M card in this machine.  Which I understand can handle this and actually can handle 4 external monitors.  How would I do that?  Could I use the display port to split dvi cable and two hdmi to hdmi cables to get to the 4 monitors.

Finally am I correct that display port or hdmi or dvi connections would all allow whatever max resolution my card can drive or is one better than the others?
