ya seriously, this is getting pretty ridiculous. its crazy how a big company like Dell hasn't done anything yet to fix a big problem. ive been wanting to purchase this monitor ever since it came out, but i havent for this very reason. i dont want to have to keep sending in my monitor due to horrible backlight problems. Dell, when do you plan on fixing this problem?? when is a new revision coming out??
if you can't see it perhaps your monitor doesn't have the problem. but go check out hardforum and a few other forums and see what other people's 2005fpw looks like. if i was playing doom3 or watching a dark scary movie, that glow in the corners would just completely spoil the experience...i think the point here is, for $600 the monitor should not be having that kind of problems. the leakage for some is actually more noticeable and annoying than dead pixels, because it's clearly visible.
so far the only sort of response i've heard from dell is from jesse, who said dell is investigating into the problem. this is probably dell's best response to this issue. some customers are reporting responses from csr along the lines of "oh that is completely normal" and refusing the exchange. that, in my opinion, is an unacceptable response. it's like saying, "yes, our products $ucks. if you dont like it, dont buy from us because we dont care for your satisfaction." kinda like just selling to profit, and disregarding for what the customer thinks.
i am not sure if this is what dell's management have informed the csr to do, or perhaps the csr are getting annoyed by all the exchanges, in anycase, people should not have to deal with these kind of issues.
lcds dominate the monitor industry, and a huge portion suffers from dead pixels. so deadpixels has become an accepted norm for lcd monitors. but the backlight issue on the 2005fpw is a problem that is not shared by any other company (atleast not to this extend). this is a clear indication that the problems here can be easily fixed. and whether dell chooses to ignore or fix the problem for their customers really indicates their values for their customers.
Every since they fired the pot smoker everthing they have made works but not 100% correctlly in most cases. The big problem is that they just keep selling them and we all keep exchangeing them. You all should call up and demand a refund.
The list just keeps getting longer and longer of items just like this. Lets see, The flat panels that would go into power saver mode and not come out, the desltops that had bad sound "noise hiss/buss problems (never fixed), The laptops d/port USB problems, No MCE update to 2005.
These are just the ones that i own and know about but they are many more.
What really seems weird to me is, if I look at it from some angles, you can't see the issue, but at other angles you can totally see the backlight issue...
My $600 17inch Neovo doesn't do this.....I definitely didn't expect my $600 Dell 21 inch bad boy to do it.....
I believe my dell has this problem, but it is VERY mild compared to some, plus I have no burnt pixels or lines (and I can guarentee you that if I had a burnt pixel, it would be going back....I dont care what the "norm" is.....if I had a TV with a Burnt Pixel Circuit City would return it)
All that said....I have a couple a dell computers, all have been really great, with really great service when issues arise.
I hope dell will offer to return and replace the 2005FP's with new ones at no cost, or send people a significant amount of money back (like $300) and just let people keep the monitors.
The 2005 FP monitors can't represent that much of dell's sales, so having a large issue with all of them isn't going to cost them alot of money to fix, but it will cost them alot of bad publicity if they don't take care of their vocal customers, the ones who buy 20 inch LCDs....the ones who complain online.
Yes, we are working on resolving the backlight issue with the 2005fp monitors. I will let the forum members know what to do once I get some information from our engineers.
But, what are we to do in the meanwhile? We cant continue to send back as we know very likely the next replacement will have the same issue. But if we hold on to it, will will run out of time for exhange (21 day total satisfaction policy) if the issue is not resolved within this timeframe.
I just got mines yesterday. My 1st LCD, moving from a Dell 19" P991 Trinitron CRT. What a huge difference.
I got the A00 VERSION, manufacured in December. I tested it last night, only has 1 dead pixel (white on black) which is not noticeable, and it has minimal backlight leakage on the upper left corner. I rarely watch DVDs on my monitor. so I'll never notice it.
It does have the purple screen effect when viewed from angles, I visited other forums where people have complained about this issue. I never had an LCD so I do not know if this is normal. It is a little weird but not a big deal, since I will be sitting right in front of it.
Looks like its a keeper. No sense in returning for one dead pixel. Maybe if the purple issue gets resolved I'll send back for a replacement, but otherwise I am perfectly happy.
Here is a very easy answer to all those that have just purchased the monitor or about to :
Send the darn thing back and don't get a replacement until it is fixed. Those that are thinking of the purchase, do not for any reason buy the monitor until Dell gets it fixed.
This way, Dell will have no choice, but to fix the problem. Don't hold your breath thinking Dell will give you another one to replace the one that is defective. My two cents worth on this on going problem. Dell is aware of the complaints, but still the monitor is for sale, if that tells you anything about how they think of the customers

I just purchased 2005fp, and am seeing purple color. I'm trying to contact DELL support about this issue, but I don't know my service tag. I know my customer number and order number, but DELL web doesn't tell me my service tag number. How can I know it? How can I get one without this problem?
Does 2001fp have this issue? If not, can I get 2001fp instead of 2005fp?
Well add my name to the fray...have a December A00 with 2 stuck pixels(not bad at all) and pretty bad backlight leakage in the upper 2 corners of the screen...kinda would be nice to know if i should bogg down dell with a replacement request or is dell going to honor a replacement after they have solved the problem? My 21 days is dwindling down...would be nice to
