Dell 2407wfp Annoying problem,
I just purchased 2407wfp A02, I do have some vertical banding problem as well, but since this matter's been beaten to death already. I have more annoying issue with this perticular monitor.
inablity to set 1600x1200 mode into 4:3 is one thing ,but having this monitor forget about 4:3 setting is even more annoying. Whenever I run older games or other apps that uses fixed resolutions (such as starcraft, diablo2 etc) I'll have to navigate through the menu and set the 4:3 mode, then when monitor switches back to widescreen resolution of desktop, it seems forget about such setting and makes me navigate the menu to set 4:3 every single time whenever I start those programs.
same problem with PIP, input always defaults to S-video no matter what, when I switch to different input (i.e. component) and then shuts pip off, when I turn pip back on it always resets back to s-video.
oh and what's this monitor flashing bright green when it's switched rapidly from light/mid gray to white. one place I remember you can test this problem is gamefaqs site. open up site such as
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/game/927345.html then use the mouse scroll to scroll up and down, and watch the bright lights flash

All you need to do is calibrate your monitor correctly and do so using only one program (ie. Disable adobe gamma). Nvidia cards have a built in tool (as I assume ATI cards do).
1. Reset the monitor’s settings.
2. Display Properties -> Advance -> GeForce -> Tools -> Display Optimisation Wizard
3. Keep the monitor’s contrast @ 50 and reworked the brightness (mines at 38) as per the instructions.
4. Level each hue’s gamma, stick to the standard temperature.
Done.
If you like "cold" light greys (no green tint) reduce the green’s top end and slightly increase the blues top end.
Display Properties -> Advance -> GeForce -> Color Correction -> Advance mode.
Adjust to taste.
It's a really nice monitor, top quality - but very misunderstood. I think the biggest problem with it is that people plug it in and expect it to look and work great with every video card out of the box.

and you didn't get much increased banding by doing that? i played around with that a little and anything I touched made banding worse.

switched to VGA from DVI, and vohla , problem is gone.
I find this problem extrememly annoying (banding is hardly noticible), this monitor is simply unusable at this state on DVI
