Dell E228WFP Backlight failure
In October 12, 2008 I purchased a Dell E228WFP monitor from Walmart.com....fast forward to May 1, 2009 and the backlight fails.....I followed instructions I saw posted by Dell- Mike M :
"Monitor Replacement for Shelf-Stock Purchases
For customers who purchase a monitor from a shelf-stock retailer and who require service under Dell’s limited hardware warranty, the technician should ask their L2 to submit a Fusion request to get a Customer number created. This will take time. Once the Customer number is created, the technician can then setup a monitor exchange.
(1) Contact Dell Technical Support. Have them open up DSN and search for 159380
Cick the Articles tab
Click Products Sold Through Retailer (Co 09) Policy and Procedure - CTS/DOC
Click Monitor Replacement for Shelf-Stock Purchases
(2) Provide the following information to the technician
Name:
Email Address:
Shipping address:
Phone number:
Monitor 20 digit PPID number found on the back on a label or on the slider card on the left:
Reason: List specific failure"
I have called Dell Customer Service Direct 3 times, got connected to someone who would "help" me. Halfway through the instructions...the phone went dead.......(OK they hung up). This has happened 3 time already. This is ridiculous..............On my desk is a completed Middlesex County NJ Department of consumer Affairs form complete with all requested documentation. I don't want to take that route.....can anyone suggest how to get someone at Dell to listen!!!
Thanks,
Joe

If the warranty is expired, get the part here.

I bought two E228WFP monitors in August of 2008. One failed due to this backlight problem only a few months after purchase (12/01/2008). Same symptoms, monitor appears to turn itself off after a few seconds of use, even though the button shows "green". The replacement works, but has an annoying buzz in power-save mode. The other monitor just died today (01/29/2010 - 1.5 years from purchase) with the same backlight problem.
Not impressed.

Funny - my E228WFP purchased in 8/08 just started going on the fritz. Lasts for a few hours each night, but then starts going black every 5 minutes or so with the power light still on. Turning the power off then on again gets the monitor running for a few more minutes each time.
I was disappointed to find out the warranty on the monitor is only 1 year because I purchased it with a desktop. Had I purchased it separately, the warranty would have been 3 years.
Chris M from Dell - how sure are you that the inverter power supply you recommend is the cure for this? I'll get one if it is - it's cheaper than a new monitor.
I'd be curious to find out how many of this model were shipped at the end of 2008. There are certainly a bunch of backlight problems being reported.

Same here, my E228WFPc just went black last night.
When I turn it on (power button lower right) it comes up for about half of a second, then goes black. If you look from a low angle from above onto the screen you can see high contrast areas of the image but the light is missing so it's practically black~~
I don't have a service tag either since I purchased the monitor 2008/1 together with a laptop as a bundle. How much warranty would that monitor have?
Is it possible to request a service number here online?
Also, does anyone know where to get the power inverter/light replacement parts for this model in Australia?
Cheers~
EDIT: Lucky I had warranty left. 30min phone call and I had a new (refurbished) E228WFP on my doorstep the next day in the afternoon.

As of this morning, all 5 of the E228WFP displays that my company owns, have failed backlights. I don't beleive that any of these displays were in production for more than a handful of months before failing. If these are the result of faulty inverters, it would be nice to be able to get replacements. A service manual would also be helpful.
Of course, the biggest help would be for Dell to own up and take care of these problems. You know, like grown ups.
The OptiPlex capacitor cover up didn't work. It's time to change strategies.

I think there is something wrong with the backlight. I am getting this problem on one of the monitors as well.
How can I check to make sure it's the backlight?
It seems to be turning off by itself and staying off while the power LED is green. Turning the monitor on and off keeps it on for a bit, but then shuts it off again. I don't think it's under warrenty, but I must say, after reading these posts, I think there is something defective about them.

darkblackeclipse,
How can I check to make sure it's the backlight?
* When turned on, shine a flashlight on the screen. If you see a dim image of the windows desktop, then the backlight is failing.

* Dell does not replace monitors once the warranty period you paid for has expired. We do not repair monitors or sell internal monitor components. You can try these 3rd party repair sites:

It's sad that this is a common problem for this monitor. I purchased the E228WFPC about 3 years ago and it's sat on a shelf since then. I finally brought it to work and started using it about 2 months ago, so it really only has a couple month's worth of operating time, and it's doing the backlight thing that everyone else is writing about. Barely visible screen while still powered on.
Has anyone successfully repaired their monitor via the changing capacitors? Other method?
