Dell U2312HM going into power-save mode

I have a Dell Inspiron 660S desktop PC, approx 6 months old, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Originally it was connected to an old 17-in monitor, with which I had no problems.

Two months ago, I bought a new Dell U2312HM 23-in monitor connected via DVI to my NVIDIA GeForce GT 620. This is working fine apart from one annoying, intermittent problem - sometimes when i start up a Microsoft app such as Word or IE9, the monitor says "Entering power save mode", then goes black, with the power button light turning amber. Shaking the mouse will bring it back to normal, just as if it had been in power-save mode the conventional way.

I have checked the drivers for the monitor and the graphics card (1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 620) and all are up-to-date.

I have read through similar threads but none seem to describe quite the same problem I am having, ie. the Microsoft link. The problem never occurs with non-MS apps such as ITunes or Google Chrome. I also noticed it happened when I was using a Control Panel utility - again, MS software.

When it happened the last few times, I checked the event log to see if there was a record of what had sent the monitor into power-save, but could not find any related entries.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could diagnose this problem?

Does this ever occur when booted into safe mode?

Can you test GT620 VGA -->VGA cable --> U2312HM VGA?

Thanks for the response.

I have not yet had an opportunity to test in safe mode.  However, I have had the monitor connected via VGA for the past few days as you suggested, and can confirm that the problem DOES NOT occur when connected this way.

Since VGA connection does not involve the graphics card (VGA is onboard graphics), presumably this points to a compatibility issue between the Dell monitor and the NVIDIA card?  If this is the case, would it be reasonable to request Dell to replace the card (the PC is still under warranty) with another one, perhaps of a different brand?

A further question: my graphics card has an HDMI port. Would there be any value in purchasing an HDMi->DVI cable to connect to the monitor (monitor has no HDMI port) in case the issue lies with the card's DVI output?
