Difference between digital and analog monitors

I know the DVI cable is different than the standard analog cable but I can't see a difference at all in the picture no matter which one I use. How can I tell if I have set up my monitor correctly for digital viewing or is it not a matter of how the screen looks, just how the info gets to the screen?
Thanks

DVI looking better may not come into play until the resolution is 1600 x 1200 x 32 and above. If you think about it digital has the advantage over analog due to less conversion. A computer is a digital medium to begin with. It has never made sense to start digital and then convert to analog just to see the computer's output. It makes much more sense to start digital and stay that way all the way to the monitor. Any time you convert from digital to analog, or from analog to digital for that matter there is a quality loss. Time and development has made digital to analog quality loss barely noticable, but it'll never be as good as digital without any conversion.

Thanks for the input. I asked because I have a capture card in my system and although the picture looks good, it doesn't seem to be any better than my old monitor. I guess it's the settings on the card but I have everything cranked up to the highest quality.
Thanks again,
