Distorted Image on Ultrasharp 2408WPF - Please Help!

I installed a Dell 2408WFP two months ago that is set up with my Dell XPS 400 desktop.  Problems with screen blinking and hesitating were recently cured by a Dell rep.  After the blinking / hesitating issue was solved I am now left with screen image that is stretched and distorted horizontally when in full screen mode at 1280 X 960 resolution (my preferred resolution).  The only setting that presents an image that is close to proper scale is 1152 X 864 but with the image cropped, leaving the black side bands on the monitor, which defeats the purpose of purchasing this expensive large screen monitor.  The maximum resolution of 1920 X 1200 presents an image that is too small for functional use…..one of the reasons for this large screen monitor was to have an image that is more user friendly.  Even when the monitor is set at maximum resolution and documents enlarged there is still a stretched image.  I am currently using the VGA cabling.  The Dell rep made sure that the ATI Catalyst Control Center was installed and working properly….but I am unable to find a fix within this software.  Can anyone offer help?

mfoley17,

1280x960 is not a validated resolution. The closest is 1280x1024. Have you played around with the OSD (On Screen Display) -Display Settings wide mode options in your currect resolution?

Chris,

Yes, I have thoroughly investigated and used all options available in the OSD.  Though 1280X960 is not a validated option in the 2408WFP documentation, it is a setting option available through the Display Properties.  Using the OSD and setting it with the image cropped, or in the “aspect” mode in conjunction with the resolution set at 1152 X 864 gives me an image that lacks most of the distortion I referred to and is not so small that I am unable to read without a magnifying glass (I have good eyesight).

The higher resolutions aside from being way too small for practical use, still distort the image (stretched horizontally) though not quite as much. Does anyone know of a solution or is there something that I am missing or do I need to seek another hardware solution? This is a very nice monitor, but since I work with a lot of graphics, I need a monitor that presents an image scaled accurately while avoiding text in the higher resolutions that is so small.  Thanks for any help.
