E2414H Driver and Windows XP Error

Trying to install the monitor driver results in the error message "A service installation section in this INF is invalid".  Peeling this back, this appears to refer to this line in the E2414H.INF driver file that comes with the monitor.

ServiceBinary  = %12%\monitor.sys

This line appears to be looking in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS folder for a file called MONITOR.SYS. This file does not exist in my Windows XP Professional SP3 code. How can I get this resolved?

  • Get a corrected E2414H.INF file that refers to a valid ServiceBinary, or
  • Get a MONITOR.SYS file installed in the right folder to make the error go away, or
  • Another solution that will fix the problem.

In the meantime, I get this error message and I can't set my screen resolution properly. Per the monitor documentation, Windows XP is supported for this monitor.

Thanks.

Our driver only provides the INF, ICM, and CAT files. I did a search for all/hidden monitor.sys on two XP SP3 computers. monitor.sys was not found. I did find it on a Windows 7 system. I have uploaded it here:
http://pages.suddenlink.net/downloaddell/monitor.sys

Maybe copy it into your WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS folder and then see if the driver will load.

Now I get a different error:

"The software you are installing for this hardware: Dell E2414H (Analog - VGA) has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.  Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize...your system.  Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing."

Has any testing been done with your recommendation to see whether this is a good idea?

Now I get:

"Cannot Install This Hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware: Plug and Play Monitor

An error occurred during the installation of the device

Driver is not intended for this platform."

Note that while the system is trying to install the monitor, it is referring to it as the Dell E2414H.  Once the installation fails then it refers to the monitor as the Plug and Play Monitor.  In the Control Panel-System-Hardware-Device Manager, the details under Plug and Play Monitor list it as a Dell monitor but without drivers installed (Code 28).

so it did not like the windows 7 monitor.sys file. I just went to the E2414H file library. XP is not a choice. I see Vista, 7, and 8. Where do you see that XP is supported by this monitor?

The User's Guide on Pages 50-52 shows how to set up the monitor in Windows XP.

Note that the product pages for this monitor do not state which OS are supported or not supported.

I researched carefully before buying this monitor that it would be compatible with Windows XP.  This is very disappointing that Dell does not provide accurate and complete guidance on OS support.

That was only the video card display settings. Since we do not offer a specific XP inf, the most you can hope to get is the Plug and Play monitor in the device manager.

I am having the same problem. I find it extremely hard to believe that Dell doesn't make their monitors compatible with their own operating systems. Is there a way to get it to quit popping up several error prompts every time I restart my computer?
