Monitor cold start-up (revisited)

Question

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

If the monitor sounds like there is an electrical problem coming from the inside of the monitor then, email support@dell.com and have the monitor replaced.

Jess,   I'm just about convinced that this ia a software issue, not a problem with the monitor.   This trouble began with a Windows error that stated Windows could not start because the system32/config file was missing or corrupt. I ran the XP disk and selected repair, and the problem seemed to go away, but reoccurred the next day.   There are files in the system32/config folder that initiate monitor configuration & allow it to recieve a signal. I believe that when I ran the repair, these files may have been changed to a generic setting, and are not allowing the monitor to read the agp card (NVIDIA 6800GT).   The problem is as exactly outlined by the member on the thread linked above. This further reinforces my belief that it is a software issue. Is there any way for you to contact that user & find out what steps were taken to rectify his problem?   Again, I am fairly certain this is stemming from a /system32/config inconsistancy regarding my monitor or graphics card.

No, no help.   Let me please relay the situation as clearly as I can:   In the 3 days I spent configuring & installing software on this new system, I had to shut down & restart probably 15-20 times, at the prompt of the program being installed. I never had an issue.   The last software to be installed was a Microsoft Bluetooth wireless mouse, and some Epson printer software. The computer was running fine, mouse worked, printer worked & I shut it down for the night.   The next day, when restarted, I not only got the monitor problems described in the other thread, but in addition, once I got the monitor to come on, I had a black screen with the error message regarding the CONFIG file. I am nearly sure the corrupted file is what caused the trouble with the monitor.   I booted into setup & made the computer boot from the XP CD. I got as far as it asking me to press 'R' for repair, and it quit responding.   On next startup, the Windows error was resolved, and the monitor seemed to be OK. The next morning, I was still hearing & seeing the horrid trouble with the monitor, but Windows was loading properly.   I have since re-installed the drivers for the monitor, and once again thought I had fixed it, only to finf the same flash & static sounds the following morning. It only does this at room temp startup, and onnce the comp is running,& I shut the monitor down a few times, it is fine.   I am under the belief (as related to me by a very knowledgeable IT professional) that when the XP disk initiated the repair, some generic monitor startup may have replaced the one specific for my video card, and that untill the card is up to full operation, this might be causing my problem.    I don't want to sound ungrateful for your help, but is their anyone else here that might be more well versed in this type of conflict? I am not a novice at computer troubles, but this one is beyond my understanding. The fact that I must allow the computer to be shut down for many hours to recreate this problem makes it impossible to know whether it has been fixed untill the next cold startup.   I am close to wit's end.   System:   Dimension 8400 P4 3.4Ghz w/HT 1024 ddr ram Nvidia Geforce 6800GT 160G HD
