Monitor display problem, bars across screen

Hi - any advice appreciated please, in relation to a sudden screen problem.

My monitor screen shows grey bars of variable intensity extending across the screen, they seem to be in line with and as deep as any text which is also on the screen being viewed. Text is readable but appears thin and spindly.
The monitor and its cable is not the cause - the monitor displays correctly on another machine and a second monitor shows the same fault when connected to my machine. I have re-installed the monitor driver (downloaded file delmon0_.exe from Dell downloads) but to no effect.

The system is a Dimension XPS T600 440BX PIII
32MB nVidia GeForce 256 AGP card
Ultrascan 19" P991 flat screen CRT monitor.
Windows 98SE

The fault appeared shortly after manipulating a series of *.jpg files using Paint Shop Pro 6 and the program seemed to corrupt some of the files.
Thanks

Hello Jack

The MX400 card is the one that came to the top of my list along with the Radeon 7000 recommended by Shunney, Video Forum. Tthe cost over here from online suppliers is around £30 delivered for either card (approx equiv to $50). Must say that with help from Forum contributors have learnt more about graphics cards than I expected would be necessary to change a defective card and ensure compatibility, what with AGP, DDR/SDRAM memory and speed etc!

I only need a workhorse machine at home (having just shelled out for a top spec machine for my son off to University and needing to take his music, games and DVDs with him. So, the XPS is more than adequate for most purposes short of serious gaming which is not on my agenda. Hence my decision to repair not upgrade the whole machine;  a mid range Dell over here would probably cost around £1000 + and in addition there would be the issue of my existing software not running happily on XP. It's very easy to spend too much on a PC.

Re question from LaverDad1, 'fraid I've not come across any specific reason for the card failure but it's evident from stuff I've found since that it's not unusual for this card to fail (some do very early in their lives).

Anyway, seems we have it sorted now - good luck fellas.

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply.  I ended up getting at $37 dollar NVidia GeForce2  64meg card.  Replaced it without incident and everything looks great... actually, the card is faster than the original, so it seems to have been a fortuitous failure.

I decided to fit a GeForce2 MX400 64MB AGP DDR from XFX, Pine Industries - system does benefit slightly from the extra card memory and problem now resolved. Chose an nVidia card in the end mainly because of the extensive information available on their web site re driver compatibility and installation etc.

Thanks for the update.
