Monitor for Notebook?

I have an XPS 1330M and was considering getting a monitor for it.  Are there compatibility issues with laptops and certain monitors?  Does one have to obey resolution limits to get full functionality from the monitor?  For example, if the resolution on the card (8400GS) is maxed at 1280 x 800, does one have to purchase a monitor with the capacity for that exact resolution for the image to be as it is on the notebook lcd?

I had my eye on the 2208 22" widescreen, but I didn't see 1280 x 800 as a supported resolution.

Thanks!

Early lcd's had that problem but no more. I'd just make sure that the new monitor was able to meet or exceed your max. a 1440 X 900 capable or higher should be fine

ChrisM and nevynder ,

Optimal res. for that SP2208WFP 22" is 1680 x 1050. I would make sure my video card could meet that spec. for clarity of text and all. It's the recommended resolution and you won't want to run any other res. once you see the LCD in that resolution.

It seems odd to me that a 8400GS would be maxed at 1200x800 but it may only show that res as max. if that is the current screens max. capabilities, if you hooked it to another monitor it might support a higher res like the 1680 x 1050 at 60 Hz, but I would check with he manufacturers specs for that video card.

If someone here has that card they might know or ChrisM can look it up for you :)
Her is a quote from another forum :

This parts what you want
m1330 1680x1050 thru DVI cable it looked crystal clear

"The m1330's HDMI *should* work with 1680x1050 since that's below 1080p resolution, but if it's blurry then maybe there's some other issue besides Amorphous's sub-HDMI-1.3 theory. FYI when I tried my 20" dell monitor (1680x1050) using a HDMI -> DVI cable it looked crystal clear. Maybe your LCD/TV isn't 1680x1050? Normally HDTVs use a 16:9 ratio whereas monitors use 16:10 so there's a chance your LCD/TV's native res isn't really 1680x1050..."

They are connecting to 24"ers, the SP2208WFP should be no problem at all and look great.

That makes total sense.  Rather silly of me to think that 1280 x 800 would be the highest rez. . .

Thanks so much for the helpful info!
