Monitor horizontal position won't go far enough
Hi, I have a Dell ST2420L/ST2421L monitor (just bought recently.) I adjusted the position of it, however the horizontal setting is at 100 and it is still not far enough over. How can I get the screen to adjust further, or what is the best option? It's not excessively bad, it just needs to go a bit further.

Hi Aquawolf16,
The display settings on Dell ST2420L monitor can reach the maximum horizontal limit of 100; which is already set to the maximum.
If the picture still doesn’t fill the entire screen, it may be due to various possible reasons:
- Different video formats (aspect ratio) of DVDs that you are playing
- Configuration settings of the graphic card installed in the computer
- Configuration settings of the monitor
- Issue with the monitor
Please perform the following steps and capture the observations:
1) Try different media or DVDs to check if that makes a difference
2) The optimum resolution for the monitors (ST2420L and ST2421L) is 1920 x 1080. Please adjust the screen resolution to optimum settings. You may find these steps useful:
For Windows XP
- Right click on the desktop and select properties
- Select the Settings tab
- Set the screen resolution to 1920 x 1080
For Windows Vista / 7
- Click 'Pearl' Icon
- Click 'Control Panel'
- Click 'Appearance and Personalization'
- Click 'Personalization'
- Click 'Display Settings'
- Under 'Resolution' move the slider to the desired resolution, and then click 'Apply'
Note: If you do not see the display optimal resolution as an option, you may need to update your graphics driver.
3) Please tell the name of the graphic card that is installed in your computer. I will suggest you with the most optimal configuration settings or steps to re-install the card drivers to get proper display. If your computer has Windows operating system, you may follow these steps to access and capture the name of graphic card:
- Click ‘Start Icon’, and then click ‘Control Panel’
- Click ‘Hardware and Sound’
- Click ‘Device Manager’
- ‘User Account Control’ dialog box may appear
- Click Continue
- ‘Device Manager’ Page opens up
- Expand option ‘Display Adapter’
- Capture the names of listed devices
4) Try performing a Factory Reset to reset all OSD (on screen display) settings to the factory preset values. Refer to image below.
5) Run the built-in diagnostics to check monitor’s functionality. You may find the following steps useful:
- Ensure that the screen is clean (no dust particles on the surface of the screen)
- Unplug the video cable(s) from the back of the computer or monitor. The monitor then goes into the self-test mode
- Press and hold the 1st and 4th buttons on the front panel, simultaneously for 2 seconds. A gray screen appears (Refer to image below)
- Carefully inspect the screen for abnormalities
- Press the 4th button on the front panel again. The color of the screen changes to red
- Carefully inspect the screen for abnormalities
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 to inspect the display in green, blue, and white colored screens
- The test is complete when the white screen appears. To exit, press the 4th button again
Note: If we do not detect any screen abnormalities upon using the built-in diagnostic tool, it implies that the monitor is functioning properly.
I hope these steps are useful. Please reply with the finding. Also feel free to ask, if you have any questions. I would be glad to assist.
